I’ve decided not to take over-the-counter pain relievers. Unless I’m in agony, I don’t envision taking prescriptions pain pills either.
For one, at least for me, OTC medications don’t work very well. They can also cause serious side effects. I actually met someone who nearly died after taking ibuprofen. She had a rare, but potentially deadly, reaction. Her life was forever changed. At least she’s alive. But it was a close call. She can never take that drug again.
There’s another reason I’ve gone natural. That’s because natural pain control can work. I’m not a doctor, and I can’t give medical advice. I can’t promise that any particular remedy or holistic treatment plan will help anyone else. But I can share my own experience.
I’ve gone from being in excruciating pain, to having just a little pain. I rarely even think about it, except when I’m blogging, and trying to describe my level of discomfort.

Once you rule out anything serious, there are a number of natural remedies to explore. You can do this while working with your doctor. I’m not a doctor and I can’t give medical advice. So everything you read here is personal experience only, based upon what I’d do for myself if my knee pain was raging.
Always check with your own healthcare team before trying anything you see on this page. Herbs may not be for you if you take certain medications. Essential oils are also good soothing agents. So make sure your own doctor has the final word on your treatment plan.
Most doctors don’t like prescribing pain medication. It can lead to addiction. If you’re dealing with pain, you’re also dealing with inflammation. For me, the best way to attack inflammation was from the inside out.
Knee Pain Relief Products
I made some drastic lifestyle changes. Junk food was out. I replaced it with healthy real food. This might sound like an extreme thing to do for knee pain. It might be. In my case, the pain was widespread. It traveled. Oftentimes, it settled in my left knee. So dietary changes led to less body-wide inflammation, and less knee pain.
Someone with more limited pain may not need to do this. But, in my case, I had little choice. My pain was disabling. So I overhauled my lifestyle.
Recovery was slow, but steady. After about three years of clean eating, my pain had markedly decreased. Please understand I was in really bad shape. This is why it probably took so long to see results. In the beginning, when my pain was horrible, I was on a low saturated fat diet. As I recovered, I expanded my diet.
Homeopathy for Knee Pain
I’ve also taken a number of homeopathic remedies. I wish I could tell you which ones. But homeopathy doesn’t work that way. There are hundreds and hundreds of remedies. You need one that closely matches your symptoms. Otherwise, you see no benefits. Prescribing is highly individualized. What worked for me probably won’t work for you. Also, what worked for me yesterday may not work for me today.
It’s really important to work with a good homeopath. Unfortunately, these professionals are really hard to find. There aren’t enough of them, and they often don’t advertise. Asking for a recommendation at your local health food store may yield some names. Chiropractors are also helpful. These practitioners know a lot about pain relief, as well as nutrition and herbal remedies.
Herbal Remedies for Knee Pain
Even though I’m feeling better, I still take herbal remedies. That’s because herbs contain natural anti-inflammatory agents. Reducing inflammation is my main goal. Holistic doctors generally believe inflammation is the root cause of illness. If you can reduce it, you feel better. (At least that’s been my experience.)
Herbal remedies have been great. But I need to switch them around. Otherwise, they stop working. Here are some of the herbal formulas I keep in my rotation.
Zyflamend – This is a very popular dietary supplement that contains 10 whole herbs. Many herbalists believe that whole plant medicine is more effective than laboratory-made isolates. I took Zyflamend for about a year, longer than I usually take anything. It did help. But, right now, I’m taking an extended break. You can order Zyflamend here.
Tulsi – This is a traditional Indian Ayurvedic remedy that’s sometimes referred to as “The Queen of Herbs.” Tulsi is an adaptogen, a plant that’s believed to help you better cope with stress. My favorite way to take tulsi is to consume it as a tea. Stash brand of organic tulsi with lavender tea is exquisite.
Camu Camu – This is a berry that grows along the banks of the Amazon. It’s very bitter, but it contains whopping amounts of Vitamin C. It also contains natural B-complex vitamins. For me, anyway, camu camu seems to decrease my pain. You may not be able to order camu camu powder locally. But you can easily find organic camu camu online.
St. John’s Wort – My chronic inflammation appears to have settled in my nerves. So I occasionally use St. John’s Wort as a nerve tonic. Although this herb is best known as a natural depression remedy, historically it’s been used to strengthen the nerves. I take St. John’s Wort periodically. I notice that if I take it for too long it causes side effects such as inability to sleep well. But if I take it for a short time span it helps me sleep. I think it’s important to listen to your body and to rotate natural remedies.
Natural Remedies for Knee Pain
My residual knee pain is now managed with essential oils. Right now, my pain is minimal. But occasionally it reaches the point where I want to use a remedy. My favorite pain control method is with essential oils. I’ve used a wide range of essential oils on my knees. Just like herbal remedies, I need to rotate my essential oils. Here are the blends I currently keep in my rotation.
Frankincense and Copaiba Oil
I like the combination of frankincense and copaiba essential oils. Both of them have a reputation as natural anti-inflammatory remedies. I feel we are so blessed to live in a time when plant-based medicines from around the world are readily available.
Frankincense is a tree resin mentioned in the Bible. Copaiba oil is a New World remedy, derived from a South American tree. Together they work so well, at least for me. Below you can see frankincense and copaiba essential oil that are sold by Plant Therapy. This is one of the aromatherapy companies I recommend on this site, because I use this brand myself.
How to Relieve Knee Pain Naturally
Anyway, I’m a huge fan of essential oil blends designed to naturally relieve pain. One blend I’ve used for a long time is Rapid Relief Synergy Blend by Plant Therapy. It contains nine different kinds of essential oils designed to work together, in synergy. It’s believe that mixing certain aromatics together multiples their effect. You can see Rapid Relief below. It also comes in a roll on version. Rapid Relief straight from the bottle is very strong. So it must be mixed with a carrier oil before applying it to your skin.
Natural Ways to Relieve Knee Pain
Another pain blend I’ve recently started using is Cooling Water Anti-Inflammatory Blend. This is sold by Nature’s Fusions, which sent me a sample to review. I really like it. I need to constantly rotate my nature remedies, and, right now, it appears as if I need a cooling formula. I realize this could change tomorrow, but, for the moment, this blend works really well for my leg pains.
Cooling Water Anti-Inflammatory Blend is an excellent alternative to the much more expensive multi-level marketing brands. Unlike most aromatic blends, which are colorless, this blend is blue. That’s because it contains blue tansy essential oil, known for its natural analgesic effect. I wasn’t planning to try Cooling Water, but the company sent me a free bottle to review. I was blown away by how well it works. So I’m recommending it to my readers. Nature’s Fusions also makes another blend called Fire & Ice Muscle Blend. I’ve found that everyone is different, and we have to figure out what remedies work best for each of us.
These statements have not been approved by the FDA. These products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease. Women who are pregnant or nursing should not use essential oils unless directed to do so by a healthcare professional.
Course On Natural Pain Management
Reducing my intense and excruciating pain naturally required a comprehensive approach. I had to attack my illness from many directions. It took years of trial and error to get to the point where I could live a normal life.
I’m forever grateful for the people and practitioners who helped me along the way. Many people are interested in what I did, to relieve my pain without drugs. It would take too long to explain. (Healing my body took years.) So I compiled a blueprint, which is available in a course format.
Being sick is expensive. No one knows that more than me. So I kept the price of this course ridiculously affordable (much less than the cost of my medical co-pays) so everyone can access it. Although I can’t claim or promise what I did will work for anyone else, the course explains in detail how I regained my health. If you’d like more information, click on the image below.
