Natural remedies were extremely helpful. I believe they provided the push my body needed to heal.
Getting well also involved adopting a non-toxic lifestyle. I cleaned up my diet and began using natural plant-based cleaning and beauty products.
Then I took a look at my relationships. Certain people had behaved treacherously. They are no longer part of my life. I pray for them and I wish them well. But, for the most part, I’ve had to go “no contact.” This was easy to do, because I’m not related to them. Nor do I work with them.
Staying connected would have been detrimental to me, and to them. As a Catholic, I believe that how you treat people will have eternal consequences. So I’m giving them a break, by no longer allowing them the opportunity to behave badly.
Life has been very peaceful since I’ve decided not to associate with these disturbed people, the poorest of the poor. I will continue to pray for them, because I know God didn’t create them to abuse others. They’ve strayed from the mission for which He made them, in His image and likeness. I’m hoping they can now live out their calling, and start relating to others more honestly.
Can People Make You Sick?

Some holistic health experts believe there’s no doubt that other people can cause enough stress to create physical symptoms, even serious illness. It’s very important to recognize this, especially if you’re battling a chronic illness. Removing a toxic force from your life may be a very healthy thing to do.
That’s what I did. Natural remedies were very helpful. But I didn’t start to recover until I made some drastic changes. This included setting boundaries, which greatly limit my contact with deceitful individuals. I cannot begin to tell you how much happier I am without them. Making this move has also freed up my time to make wonderful new friends.
Toxic situations can create chronic, low-level stress. You may not realize it right away, but your body does. Whether we know it or not, our body detects a threat. If this was a crisis, it would be a good thing. For instance, if a wolf was going to attack, we’d need to respond quickly.
However, we can also become stuck in this pattern. Our brain continues to manufacture high levels of a hormone called CRH. This signals your adrenal glands to produce more cortisol than needed. Although cortisol is necessary for life, too much lowers our immune response, and raises our blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
Cortisol is sometimes called “the death hormone,” because of the potentially dangerous consequences of having too much of it circulating in your bloodstream. It also appears to interfere with our ability to relax, unwind and get a good night’s sleep.
Does Stress Cause Inflammation?
Many alternative health experts believe that excess inflammation is why we get sick. Researchers now know that stress directly causes inflammation, because it activates the immune cells, when they don’t need to be switched on. This cellular response can trigger chronic inflammation, which, in turn, can cause diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
Stressful events are often caused by people. We have no control over their actions. But we can control, to some extent, whether or not we allow certain types of abuse to continue.
Can Toxic People Make You Sick?
Typically, emotional vampires are very sneaky. You may not even know you’re being abused in the beginning. But you may sense a vague uneasiness when you’re in the company of such a person. Interactions don’t result in a sense of peace.
Later, the relationship becomes very destructive. Toxic people typically suffer from personality disorders, such as malignant narcissism. This means they create chaos. They also specialize in turning people against each other. If you have a disordered person in your life, expect a lot of drama.
Bully behavior is also part of the picture. The sooner you can remove yourself, the better. If you happen to work with a bully, the faster you can find another job, the better off you’ll be.

Dealing with a difficult person can definitely have a terrible impact on your wellbeing. Once you recognize this for what it is, removing yourself from this situation is often your best bet. In the case of an office bully, however, this is much easier said than done. Most of us need to work, in order to earn a living. Not forgiving them only hurts you. It can make you sick. It can destroy you. It can turn you into an angry bitter person. If that happens, they’ve won. Disturbed people often want to hurt others and even destroy them. Don’t let them succeed at this sinister goal. Turn the tables and forgive them. Then you’ll start to see them in a new light, as broken, pathetic people in need of healing themselves.
Forgiveness does not have to mean spending time with the person who’s hurt you. It simply means that you are no longer angry, and that you wish them the best. Here is a book I’ve written how to forgive the unforgivable.
