A few years ago, I finally broke down and bought my first bottle of essential oil. I’d been hearing about these highly concentrated plant extracts for some time. However, I was deeply invested in homeopathy, and I felt that could handle most of my health needs.
Homeopathy is wonderful. But, usually, you need to work with a professional. Essential oils, on the other hand, are much easier to use. They also smell great and they’re so also a lot of fun.

This growing enthusiasm surrounding essential oils has given rise to an industry. There are countless companies now selling aromatherapy products and accessories. It’s even possible to find essential oil diffusers designed to work in your car.
I’m convinced that part of the reason they’ve become so popular is because they can lift out spirits. Essential oils have been used for centuries, to treat both physical and emotional conditions.
In recent years, scientists have started to study them. It’s now known that certain aromatics can help take the edge off of anxiety, and appear to have mood elevating properties as well.

One of the best ways to use essential oils is to diffuse them. Essential oils have a very small molecular structure. So they can easily reach our bloodstream when we inhale them. Actually, this appears to be one of the best ways to reap their potential therapeutic benefits.
Naturally, those of us who like our oils don’t like to be without them for long. But it’s very difficult to bring your average cold air essential oil diffuser on the road. However, you can now find a wide range of portable essential oil diffuser. Some of these are designed for use at work, and are powered with USB cords. Others, though, are made especially for the car.

You can now find a variety of essential oil diffusers designed for use in the car, available online. (They could be used in a recreational vehicle as well. The clip-on model below, on the far left, would be very easy to use. A couple of drops of essential oil would be placed on a special pad. This allows the oil to slowly disperse throughout the car.
The other model is a cold mist diffusers, and it’s designed to fit into a cup holder.

Essential Oil Diffuser Air Freshener for Car
Essential oil diffusers can also double as a non-toxic air freshener for your vehicle. It’s been widely reported that chemical-based air fresheners may pose a health risk. (Personally, knowing what I know now, I wouldn’t want to disperse these compounds into my home, or my car.)
One study published in 2014 found that a class of compounds known as phthalates, commonly found in air fresheners, were linked to childhood asthma, among babies born to mothers exposed to these chemicals during pregnancy. Although this is not conclusive proof, it is concerning.
Meanwhile, we do know that phthalates function as hormone disruptors. This, alone, makes me wary of exposing my family to these compounds. Fortunately, it’s possible to get that same clean, fresh car smell with essential oils. Now, I use only natural fresheners, such as essential oils and frankincense resin.
Essential Oils for Car Diffusers
Those of us who use our essential oils often are well aware that different aromatics have different properties. For instance, patchouli, Roman chamomile or lavender essential oil are typically used in tranquility blends. For this reason, I would not use these oils individually or in a blend while driving.
One day, I learned this lesson first hand. I had planned to do a lot of work. However, I also decided to test a homemade relaxation blend in the middle of the day. This was a big mistake, because all I wanted to do was go to sleep.
(Please understand that I’m not a professional aromatherapist, so I can’t give medical advice. Nor can I claim that an essential oil will yield the desired results. So I urge you to check with a knowledgeable expert before using essential oils in your car. You also may want to test an oil before driving, to see how you react.)
So if you plan to use a car diffuser, I’d choose the oils carefully. I might even think about using an essential oil blends designed for energy, such as the one below. This is sold by Plant Therapy, one of the most trusted names in the aromatherapy world.
