    Clary Sage For Insomnia

August 27, 2016 in Essential Oils

clary sage essential oil for insomniaClary sage is a little known, but very useful essential oil. It has a much lower profile than lavender or peppermint oil. These are two popular aromatics, the ones most people tend to initially purchase.

I first tried clary sage essential oil a number of oil years ago. I don’t quite remember why I bought it. It might have been because my daughter, at the time, had painful menstrual cramps. Clary sage has a reputation for being a good uterine tonic.

Anyway, I put the bottle aside for at least a  year. Then I pulled it out again. That’s because I was having trouble sleeping. For some “mysterious” reason, the lavender and sweet orange essential oils I’d been using didn’t seem to work anymore.

Later, I learned why they suddenly became ineffective. Essential oils, at least for me, work best when they’re not used continually, without a break. That’s why I’m so happy to have found clary sage.

    Clary Sage For Insomnia

Thanks to the clary sage, I started sleeping well again. Then, I started doing more research as to the potential benefits of this little-known oil, which I was very happy to have around the house when I needed it.

Clary sage’s scientific name is Salvia sclarea. For centuries, it’s been used medicinally. This plant is native to the Mediterranean area. It can also be found in some parts of the Middle East and in North Africa as well. Medical discourses on clary sage have been found in the writings of a number of ancients, including Pliny the Elder, a 1st century naturalist.

Salvia sclarea is a pretty flowering plant. The oil of the clary sage plant is distilled from its seeds. In times past, as well as the present, it has a wide range of potential applications. For instance, I often use it on my face as a natural wrinkle fighter.

Clary sage oil is often used in perfumes. It has a lovely fruity, flowery and woodsy smell, with a little bit of red wine mixed on.

    Ovvio Oils Relaxation Blend

Given clary sage’s reputation for being mentally soothing, I’m not surprised to find it as the first ingredient in a popular stress blend sold by Ovvio Oils, which also includes lavender, mandarin, frankincense, bergamot, elemi, geranium and vanilla essential oils.

    Potential Clary Sage Health Benefits

In addition to clary sage’s reputed ability for relieving anxiety and insomnia, aromatherapists often recommend this oil for a number of other conditions. These include:

    • Because clary sage is believed to calm the senses. It also appears to have anti-spasmodic qualities. So one potential use is to quiet spasms in the body, including painful muscle spasms, as well as spasms of the digestive tract. It’s also considered good for relieving indigestion, such as bloating or abdominal pain.
    • Clary sage is also said to be good for regulating the hormones. I suspect my insomnia was related to a hormonal imbalance, which some woman often experience around mid-life. Because this plant is considered good for balancing hormones, just a little whiff before bed was all I needed, along with a little bit of clary sage, diluted with a carrier oil, on the inside of my wrist.
    • Bacteria may have a hard time living in the presence of essential oils, many of which contain natural compounds that fight pathogens. This would be a good oil to put in a diffuser to make your house smell nice. Some aromatherapy practitioners also recommend putting diluted clary sage on a skin wound, in order to facilitate healing.
    • General skin care. Clary sage mixed with a carrier oil and applied to your skin is said to heal rashes. (However, always put a little oil on a small test patch first, to check for sensitivities.)
    • Aging Skin. Many women, myself included, use clary sage oil as a natural wrinkle fighter. It can be mixed with a carrier such as grapeseed oil or fractionated coconut oil.

How To Use Clary Sage Essential Oil

There are many more potential uses for clary sage. But a more exhaustive list would take up too much space. Although you don’t need to buy every oil ever made, and just a few different types of essential oil should meet most of your health and household needs, clary sage is one you may want to consider if you have trouble relaxing.

Please understand, though, that I’m not a doctor. So I can give medical advice or make any claims that clary sage oil will help you get the rest you need. All I can do is share my own experience of how I use essentials oils to help me unwind.

Where to Buy Clary Sage Oil

The three 100 percent pure clary sage essential oils shown below are all from reputable companies. I’ve personally used the NOW brand of clary sage, as well as Aura Cacia.

I included Plant Therapy clary sage because I’ve purchased a number of oils from this company, which I often recommend on this site. I want my readers to have access to information about various brands that are not sold through multilevel marketing channels, just in case they don’t like shopping that way. None of the oils shown here are sold through an MLM network.
