It’s easy to make DIY essential oil sleep spray. All you need are your favorite essential oils. Plus a few other ingredients.
Essential oils can help you relax. That’s why they’re considered good for insomnia. A lot of people are using them for this reason, judging by the number of sleep blends on the market.
Sleep is something I’ve struggled with. I had severe insomnia. It lasted for years. I’ve tried herbs. I’ve used homeopathic remedies. And just about everything else.
Guess what’s helped the most? Essential oils.

Essential oils are proven to promote feelings of well being. There’s evidence they function as natural mood busters. One group of scientists reviewed a number of previous studies. They found that essential oils are effective for depression.
These results were published in the Evidence Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine journal. The authors concluded that, “aromatherapy showed potential to be used as an effective therapeutic option for the relief of depressive symptoms in a wide variety of subjects.”
Depression and sleep problems often appear together.
Scientists are just beginning to understand how aromatic oils can affect our mind. But plant-based remedies have been used for ages to treat all kinds of conditions, emotional as well as physical.
However, I’m not suggesting people taking anti-depressants suddenly stop. (This would be dangerous advice.) All I’m doing is pointing out that essential oils are potentially effective at improving your mood.
Essential Oils for Sleep and Anxiety Recipe
Lavender, marjoram, cedarwood and clary sage essential oil are all considered good sleep remedies. I’ve used them myself.
Sometimes I use single essential oils. Other times I use a sleep and relaxation blend. I own several of these, which I’ve purchased from Plant Therapy. This company sells amazing oils at good prices.
Occasionally, I make my own sleep blends. Once, I made a relaxation blend that was really effective. When I used it in the middle of the day I didn’t want to do anything else the rest of the day. (I’ll share this recipe later. Just be warned. It works.)
Out of all of the essential oils, it appears that lavender oil has the most research behind it, at least in terms of mood. One study published in the Evidence Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine journal found that lavender appeared to work as a natural sedative and mood stabilizer.
So It’s no wonder lavender essential oil is found in many blends designed to promote better sleep.
Deep Sleep Pillow Spray DIY
Many nights I’ve sprinkled a drop or two of lavender essential oil on my pillow. Or I’ve put some on a cloth and placed it near my pillow. Both method work.
Another good option is an essential oil sleep spray, which you can spray on your pillow before you go to bed. This has another benefit as well.
Sometimes pillows can start to smell from oils in your hair. Lavender essential oil spray can neutralize that smell. I’ve noticed that I don’t need to wash pillowcases as often when I use a lavender-based essential oil linen spray.
You don’t have to use lavender essential oil in your DIY sleep spray recipe. But it’s probably the best oil to start with.
Lavender Spray For Sleep
For this recipe you will need a large 16 ounce glass spray bottle. Using plastic isn’t a good idea. That’s because essential oils can eat away at the plastic. You won’t want to inhale plastic particles. Glass is stable, and will hold up even when essential oils are stored in it.
Distilled water or natural spring water
16 ounce glass spray bottle (You can get it here)
40 drops of lavender essential oil (You can get it here)
2 ounces of alcohol free witch hazel (You can get it here)
Put the alcohol free witch hazel in the spray bottle and fill almost to the top with water. Leave just enough room to add the lavender essential oil.
Professional aromatherapists like blends. That’s because it’s believed that using two or more essential oils together creates a synergy. This means that it’s probably more powerful than using just a single oil.
So feel free to mix it up. You could, for instance, use 20 drops of lavender oil and 20 drops of frankincense essential oil. I’ve often mixed lavender with elemi essential oil. This combination is very soothing and relaxing.
How To Make Sleep Spray With Essential Oils
Use the above recipe, with alcohol free witch hazel. Make sure to put it into a glass spray bottle. However, a number of other oils are used, in addition to lavender oil.
8 drops of lavender essential oil (You can get it here)
8 drops of geranium essential oil (You can get it here)
8 drops of vanilla essential oil (You can get it here)
8 drops of ylang ylang essential oil (You can get it here)
8 drops of patchouli essential oil (You can get it here)
Mix together and use before bedtime. Warning. I used it in the middle of the day and I wanted to sleep the rest of the day away.
