DIY Pain Cream With Essential Oils

August 31, 2016 in Essential Oils

DIY pain cream with essential oilsI have chronic nerve inflammation. Most of the time, it doesn’t bother me. I’ve recovered to the point where I lead a normal life.

Occasionally, though, I do feel pain. When it happens, I reach for my essential oils, instead of an OTC pain reliever. For me, anyway, pain medication doesn’t work very well. Also, it can cause potentially dangerous side effects.

Essential oils, on the other hand, are remarkably safe, as long as they’re used right. (This means not ingesting them unless under the direction of a professional.) I’ve also found they bring quick relief.

So, if I’m having a bad day, I either make my own essential oil pain recipe. Or, I use special aromatic blends designed to ease discomfort.

Can Essential Oils Help With Pain?

I like to give my readers information on how to live better and healthier lives. Although I’m not a doctor, and I can’t give medical advice. I can share my personal experience. This includes two bouts of adrenal fatigue.

Recovering the first time was easy. The second time was a struggle. My health has improved, but I’m left with chronic nerve inflammation. This is something I’ll likely fight for the rest of my life. But I remain pretty much symptom free, as long as I eat right and use natural remedies to curb the inflammation.

If I need pain relief, I reach for my essential oils. Below is the formula I’ve used in the past to manage my pain. I mix it with a carrier oil before putting it on my skin. However, you can also add it to a luxurious body butter, which I’ll tell you how to make.

Pain Cream Made With Essential Oils

Out of all the aromatics, peppermint essential oil is probably the best known for its natural analgesic properties. Clove and ginger are also commonly recommended for mild discomfort. When I’ve had a headache, I’ve used peppermint oil alone. I was amazed at how quickly it worked to ease the tension. Even though I can’t claim that any natural remedy will help anyone else, this is why you’ll find natural essential oils, instead of OTC drugs, in my natural medicine cabinet.

Peppermint, clove, ginger are included in the Plant Therapy Rapid Relief formula, along with a number of other aromatic oils, including laurel leaf, black pepper, cassia, German chamomile, juniper and thyme.

Typically, aromatherapists like to recommend blends. It’s believed that combining compatible oils creates a more powerful synergy.

Anyway, essential oils are highly concentrated. This means their too strong to put directly on your skin. So you need to mix them with a carrier oil, such as fractionated coconut oil.

If you plan to apply them to a large part of your body, or your face, you should use a 1 percent dilution. This would equal 3 drops of essential oil to 2 teaspoons of carrier oil. For smaller areas, you can use a 2 percent essential oil mix.

You can also use body butter instead of carrier oil. One advantage is that body butter is so luxurious and it glides on your skin. Body butter with shea butter is extremely moisturizing. So, if you suffer from dry skin, it’s an excellent natural emollient.

How To Make Pain Cream With Essential Oils

One winter, I decided to make my own body butter. I thought it would be much more difficult than it was. However, it turned out to be a fun project, and incredibly easy. Made with just two ingredients, plus the essential oils, it turned into a smooth creamy formula that kept its consistency for months.

To make your own body butter, all you need is shea butter and coconut oil. Here’s the recipe.

1 cup of organic coconut oil (You can find it here)

1/2 cup of organic shea butter (You can find it here)

15 drops of Plant Therapy Rapid Relief (You can find it here)

    • Melt these ingredients in a stainless steel pan on low heat.
    • As soon as they’re melted, remove from heat and let cool for 15 minutes.
    • Put this mixture in the freezer for 10 minutes. It will start to harden around the edges.
    • Remove from freezer and whip with an egg beater for about 11 minutes. The mixture should start to turn white and form peaks much like egg whites.

Homemade Pain Cream With Essential Oils

You can add essential oils typically recommended for pain relief to the body butter mix just before you finish whipping it. Or, you could use this cream as a base and add the essential oils in later. Use the standard dilution of 2 drops of essential oil to every teaspoon of cream.

Pain Relief Cream With Essential Oils

If you already own essential oils, you probably have peppermint essential oil or clove essential oil in your collection. If not, I highly recommend Plant Therapy Rapid Relief, which gives you a large selection of oils, often recommended for their potential analgesic action, in one bottle.

Plant Therapy Rapid Relief is designed for adults. However, this company also sells a special blend called Better Than Kisses, designed for children between the ages of 2 and 10. Plant Therapy is one of my very favorite essential oil companies. This is partly because it’s a leader in safety. Its KidSafe line is formulated by world famous aromatherapy expert Robert Tisserand.

    Variation On Pain Relief Recipe

Another pain relief blend I like a lot is Natures Fusions Cooling Waters Anti-Inflammatory Blend. It’s a more cooling formula that works well for my body type. You can use it in the above recipe, instead of Rapid Relief. It comes in a big bottle. So it should last a long time.

Hi Margaret, thank you so much for reading and for your feedback. I’ve also used just peppermint oil (mixed with a carrier) with good success. But multiple oils used together seem to work even better, at least for me.

Per my doctor, wait until the wound(s) healed on the skin. Test it on a small area first. Good luck.

Yes, definitely don’t put essential oils on a broken wound and test on a small area first. Great advice. Thanks so much for reading my blog.

I have continually been using the DIY site, and NO ONE gives recipes to make creams! They intimate that you’ll get a recipe for cream! They never really give it! I want a cream to add essential oils to,easy!!!! No pastilles etc. just make it easy! I happen to have a nerve auto immune disease, causing me to spill some liquids! Using EO’S alone is not good! I fed up! Dee. Lavers

Dee, if you want to use essential oils for pain, you can simply mix it with a carrier oil and then add your essential oil. Mix the essential oil and the carrier oil before you put it on your body. As you know, it’s not good to use essential oils alone. The benefit of making a cream or using a pain cream is that you can make it beforehand and use it as needed. This is much more convenient if you work or if you travel. But you could just use carrier oil if you don’t mind mixing it beforehand. The recipe for the cream is in the post. I think you might have missed it. I know how frustrating it is to live with chronic pain.

She does. I’m aware of her site. One of the best natural health sites on the Web. Dee, then just put your essential oils in a carrier oil. Some people like creams. But if you don’t like to make them or work with pastilles don’t worry about it. Pastilles only add firmness. You can use just coconut oil and shea butter for the recipe. I actually did include an easy to follow recipe in this post. Best wishes to you.

I have had 3 surgeries on my foot and 2 of them were don’t within a year of each other because my bones don’t fuse. I have. Lot of nerve pain and was told it’s now peripheral neuropathy. I’m trying hard to find relief and I saw your post.
If I want to add a few or a lot of different EO’s how many drops do I put in? I know sometimes recipes I use have different amounts for each of them and some the amounts are the same. I thank you for putting a basic cream recipe I just didn’t know how to know if I out too much EO or not enough. Thank you for the posting

Hi Jennifer, the standard recommendation is 3 drops of essential oil to 1 teaspoon of carrier oil. But children and people in frail health should use less, maybe half of that, according to a professional aromatherapist I follow. Always check with your doctor before using essential oil. Essential oils along would not have solved my pain problem. They were part of the solution but not the entire solution. They helped me and still do. But I’ve made many lifestyle changes. Thanks for reading my blog.
