Last year, I’ve suffered through a bout of TMJ. This is short for temporomandibular joint disorder. It can mimic tooth pain. A special essential oil blend helped so much, especially at night. This is when the intense pain hit, and sleep became difficult.
Because this pain traveled, all around one side of my face, I suspected it didn’t originate in my teeth. So, instead of visiting my dentist, I went to see my chiropractor.
However, let me state right upfront that I’m not a medical professional. For most people experiencing severe tooth pain, a trip to the dentist is definitely in order. That’s to rule out any potentially serious conditions, such as tooth abscess.
Because I have such confidence in my chiropractor, he was the first (and only) practitioner I saw. If it wasn’t something he could fix, I knew he’d send me elsewhere. (Then I’d visit my dentist.) That’s why it’s so important to choose the right practitioner. There are good chiropractors. There are bad ones. Mine is one of the best. There’s a wait to see him. My chiropractor solves the problem, and then says the treatments are finished. These are good signs.

My TMJ attack hit the left side of my face. Sometimes, it seemed to linger in my ear. Other times, it was my upper jaw. This could easily be mistaken for tooth pain. Other times, it was the entire lower side of my face.
The pain came and went. During the day, it wasn’t bad. Oftentimes, I couldn’t even feel it. But it flared up at night. Drinking liquids, after 8 pm, would typically set it off. It was excruciating when I went to bed, and tried to sleep. By morning it would be gone.
I have a lot of natural remedies in the house. These include essential oils. I knew essential oils wouldn’t solve the problem. But a special aromatic pain-relief blend took the edge off, during my chiropractic treatments.
Essential Oils for Mouth Pain
At night, before I went to bed, I’d rub this special essential oil pain-relief formula on the lower left part of my face. This blend was mixed with a carrier oil. That’s because it’s too strong to put directly on your skin. Also, carrier oils are very important. It’s believed they help “carry” the healing compounds into your body.
After about five minutes, the pain would subside. The Cooling Waters blend was a God send, because it allowed me to sleep. I’d also apply it once or twice during the day, if needed. One of the worst aspects of TJM is that it can interfere with your sleep. Mine seemed to come alive the minute my head hit the pillow.
Essential Oils for Tooth and Jaw Pain
My body responded well to chiropractic treatments. But they didn’t work instantly. Actually, I needed to see my chiropractor five or six times before I noticed a big improvement. Unfortunately, the first treatments resulted in more pain. (This temporary increase in symptoms is known as retracing.) It’s a normal part of the healing process if you have chiropractic care. It’s actually a good sign the treatments will eventually work.
But during this period of healing, I had more pain. I was happy to be able to control it naturally, without drugs. Essential oils contain are thought to contain natural anti-inflammatory and natural analgesic compounds. But they’re very safe, when used as directed. They don’t carry the potential side effects of pharmaceutical pain medication.
Essential Oils to Use for Tooth Pain
Essential oils are very popular for pain relief, judging by the number of pain blends on the market. Nowadays, nearly every essential oil company sells its own pain blend. Because I have chronic nerve pain, I intend to try various blends. One reason I like to switch my pain blends around is because they seem to work better that way.
Essential oils generally stop working for me if I use them too many days in a row without a break. So that’s why I like to own a number of different kinds of oils, noted for natural pain relief.
Essential Oil For Gum Pain
In the past, I’ve used a blend called Rapid Relief, sold by Plant Therapy. This is an amazing company, where I buy a lot of my own oils. I like Rapid Relief a lot. But my body seems to really crave a more cooling formula.
So, for my TMJ, I had a bottle of Cooling Water Anti-Inflammatory blend, sent to me by Natures Fusions, so I could review it. At the time, I had no idea that I’d actually desperately need it for intense tooth and jaw pain. It worked so well that I’ve ordered a second bottle. I don’t use this blend every day. Only when it’s needed. Rotating my essential oils helps them work better, I’ve found.
Cooling Water Anti-Inflammatory blend is not a multilevel marketing product. Instead, it’s sold directly to customers by Natures Fusions, which is based in Utah.

Essential Oils for Sinus Tooth Pain
A lot of the time, my pain was centered in my upper gum line. This felt a lot like sinus pain. It was right on my gum. But I knew not to put essential oils directly over that spot, inside my mouth.
I don’t take essential oils internally, and I warn my readers about this practice. There may be times when it’s appropriate. But this should happen only under strict medical supervision, with a medical professional well-trained in using essential oils internally, according to the Aromatherapy Registration Council.
How to Use Essential Oils for Tooth Pain
So, instead of putting strong essential oils in my mouth, I put them on my face. The Cooling Waters Anti-Inflammatory blend was highly diluted with a carrier oil. A commonly recommended dilution ratio, if you’re using essential oils on your face, is to use a 1 percent dilution. This means you need just 1 drop of essential oil to 1 teaspoon of carrier oil.
Essential oils are very strong and the Cooling Waters blend is among the strongest formula I’ve tried. So dilution is necessary. Putting this blend on my face (along with a carrier oil) was sufficient. I didn’t need to put it inside my mouth in order for it to work.
Essential Oil Recipe for Tooth Pain
If you have essential oils in the house, you can also make your own pain relief recipe. A wide range of essential oils are believed to contain natural anti-inflammatory compounds. Some are especially noted for their natural analgesic properties as well. These include peppermint, wintergreen and other oils from the mint family. Lavender essential oil is particularly soothing, and it’s included in Cooling Waters Anti-Inflammatory blend.

You can also make your own tooth pain relief formula with essential oils you may already have on hand. I’m a big fan of using what’s already in the house. Plus, if you’re reading this, you may want immediate relief. Just make sure to put your essential oils in a carrier oil before rubbing them on the outside of your jaw, or wherever you feel the pain.
2 tsp of carrier oil (even olive oil will work, but you can order fractionated coconut oil if you want to own a good carrier)
2 drops of peppermint essential oil (If you don’t own any, you can order it here)
1 drop of lavender essential oil (If you don’t own any you can order it here)
1 drop of frankincense essential oil (If you don’t own any you can order it here)
Mix these ingredients together and apply as needed. Store in a clean glass jar with a cover.
Home Remedies for TMJ Ear Pain
Essential oils were so helpful. I was also able to find some pain relieving exercises for TMJ on YouTube.
But I really needed a long-term fix. I credit my chiropractor for getting rid of the pain. In addition, I took a homeopathic remedy that really seemed to help. My best advice for finding a good chiropractor is to ask around. One of the best places to inquire is at your local health food store.
I’ve found that health food store workers are extremely knowledgeable about natural medicine and dietary supplements. They also hear about good practitioners from their customers. People who use natural medicine tend to be enthusiastic proponents of drug-free healing. And they’re often very willing to share information about what’s helped them.
Jaw Pain Relief Home Remedies
The same advice also holds if you’re looking for a good homeopath or acupuncturist. Health food store workers are oftentimes your best resource. (Some people with TMJ report positive results after a series of acupuncture sessions.) If you already have a good chiropractor, he or she can often point you to other good practitioners.
I’ve found that combining healing methods often leads to good results. Don’t forget about eating a well-balanced diet of foods that reduce inflammation too. I’ve learned a lot about pain over the years. Unfortunately, I have widespread body pain. But I’m able to control these symptoms with lifestyle changes. I’ve had to make some changes. But it’s a small price to pay for not living in pain.
Tooth and Jaw Pain Relief
The pain I described in the beginning of this article flared up in my jaw and along my gum line. Because I have chronic nerve inflammation, pain can appear in different parts of my body.
At one time, this pain was debilitating. But I’ve learned to manage it with natural remedies. Now I live pretty much pain free. Getting my pain under control without drugs has taken years. I’ve learned to do this through a lot of trial and error. I used various natural remedies and healing methods, which you can read about in my easy to follow online course called Natural Pain Management Strategies.
This course is designed to give you the tools you need, so you can find your own unique path to wellness. We’re all different, so what works for one person may not work for another. There are no miracle cures. Everything is highly individual. (Don’t believe anyone who tells you otherwise.) For more information, click on the image below.
