I have chronic nerve pain. But God is good.
Thanks to prayer, diet changes and a lot of natural remedies, I’m now living a normal life. My pain is minimal. I no longer have widespread body pain. Instead, little areas of pain crop up from time to time. But I think of them as brush fires that need to be extinguished. Before, I was dealing with a five-alarm fire, all the time.
When pain rears its ugly head, I reach for my essential oils. I don’t take OTC or prescription pain relievers. They’re not very effective against my nerve pain. Plus, they come with a host of potential side effects, some of them serious.
Essential oils, on the other hand, contain natural analgesics. Used correctly, they’re very safe. Plus, they seem to help a lot with my nerve pain. This is something pain medication doesn’t touch. For years, I’ve been using essential oils whenever I have a headache, or a backache. They bring immediate relief.
My latest pain has been TMJ, otherwise known as temporomandibular joint disorder. It’s a nasty type of discomfort that hits the jaw, and can extend to the ear. In my case, it gets worse at night. This makes it difficult to sleep. Could essential oils help?

I use essential oils for so many things. Natural pain control is one. But I also put these highly concentrated plant extracts in my DIY all natural cosmetics. I use essential oils for housecleaning. When I’m working they help me focus. And, at the end of the day, essential oils help me sleep. I even use essential oils for natural insect control, in my kitchen. (Peppermint essential oil is good at keeping ants away.)
However, using aromatics for TMJ would be a totally new experience. Would they work?
I don’t see essential oils as the sole solution to my jaw pain. The discomfort was simply my body’s way of telling me that something is wrong. And it was. My chiropractor confirmed that I had a neck alignment problem. He’s trying to fix it, something that will probably take multiple visits, spread out over a few weeks. In the meantime, I want to get some sleep. That’s why I needed something safe, natural and effective.
Essential Oils for TMJ Jaw Pain
This is my first (and hopefully last) bout with TMJ. It seems as if certain essential oils are making a huge difference. How do I know? For two nights, I applied a formula called Nature’s Fusions Cooling Water Anti-Inflammatory Blend to my painful left jaw. Then I went to sleep. I slept through the night, without being woken up by a dull, but intense pain spreading over the entire lower side of my face.
Then, the third night I didn’t use the Cooling Water blend before I went to bed. That’s because I thought my condition was healed to the point that I didn’t need it. Big mistake. I fell asleep. But I was quickly awakened by excruciating jaw pain. So I hopped out of bed, knowing I’d need to use essential oils if I wanted to sleep. I mixed the Cooling Water Anti-Inflammation Blend with a carrier oil and put it on my jaw. It brought immediate relief.
I’ve been using essential oils to manage pain naturally for years. Prior to trying Cooling Water, I used another formula called Rapid Relief. I highly recommend this as well. But, for me, natural remedies work best if I switch them around. So it was time to try something else.
Is There an Essential Oil for TMJ?
Anyway, needless to say, Cooling Water Anti-Inflammatory Blend is something I want to always have in my house. I’ll continue to use it on my jaw, until the problem goes away. Nature’s Fusions is one of the companies I like to tell my readers about. Its oils are extremely high quality, and affordable, since they’re not sold through a multilevel marketing network. Nature’s Fusions is a family-run business based in Utah, and it’s an excellent alternative to the MLM networks.

Peppermint Essential Oil for TMJ
Anyway, for me, I get best results when I rotate my oils. For instance, I may use Cooling Water Anti-Inflammatory Blend for a few nights, before switching to something else. Nature’s Fusions also sent me a bottle of Fire & Ice Muscle Blend, which contains peppermint, wintergreen, lavender, basil, marjoram, clary sage, chamomile and helichrysum essential oils. This would be another option for natural pain relief.
Both of these blends contain peppermint essential oil. This aromatic is found in nearly all pain blends, because of its natural analgesic action. You can use peppermint oil by itself. But it’s probably more powerful if you blend it with other oils. That’s why I like to use it as part of a pain formula that contains oils from other plants. It’s believed that using multiple aromatic oils together creates a more effective synergy.
Essential Oils that Help TMJ
Frankincense and copaiba essential oil are often used for natural pain relief as well. I love the combination of frankincense and copaiba, both derived from trees. Frankincense comes from an Old World tree mentioned in the Bible. Copaiba oil is from a tree that grows in Brazil.
However, for me, the two oils are a marriage made in Heaven. Mixing them together and applying to my jaw resulted in instant pain relief. I also used a mixture of frankincense and copaiba essential oil on the night I didn’t use the Cooling Water blend. This recipe worked just as well.
So, right now, I’m rotating my oils, so I don’t have to use each one for two long. If you don’t already own frankincense, I highly recommend Nature’s Fusions brand. This frankincense oil is just amazing.
You may also want to consider Plant Therapy frankincense essential oil. I also own a bottle of this company’s frankincense serrata.
Frankincense essential oil also works very well with copaiba essential oil. This aromatic is widely known for its natural anti-inflammatory action. In general, it’s considered a good idea to use more than one essential oil at a time. It’s believed the mixing creates a powerful synergy.
Essential Oils for TMJ Pain
I do need to point out that I’m not a medical professional. I can’t give advice, or promise that a specific remedy will work for anyone else. I’m strictly sharing my own experience with successfully using essential oils to manage my TMJ pain.
I didn’t expect aromatic oils to solve my problem. This was something that needed professional attention. Fortunately, I have a really good chiropractor, and complete confidence he’ll help me. Instead, I’m using these oils to manage the pain naturally, while waiting for the treatments to work. I’m also taking various homeopathic remedies designed for jaw pain.
Update: My jaw pain is gone and never returned when I found the right homeopathic remedy. I never returned to the chiropractor for this problem and I no longer needed to use essential oils to quell the fire in my jaws. Meanwhile the essential oil pain relief blend was a lifesaver.
Since I have chronic nerve inflammation, I know I’ll be dealing with flare ups in various parts of my body, probably for the rest of my life. But no more jaw pain. Essential oils and other natural remedies have helped so much. I love sharing my story with others, in hopes of encouraging them to do their own research.

Essential Oils for Jaw Pain
You mentioned seeing a chiropractor. I seen one m about 25 yrs ago. Told me my neck was not right as well and wanted to fix it. I went everyday to see him for a few weeks. Long story short, he ended up blowing a disc in my neck. I’ve have to had emergency surgery twice. Now I have metal plates and screws in my neck. So please be very careful.. I am 52 now and am having lots of neck pain.. please, please, be very careful with that kind of person.
Hi Denitta, I’m so sorry to hear about this terrible experience. I agree that you have to choose your chiropractor very, very carefully, because a bad practitioner can potentially make things worse, as you know first hand. My chiropractor is very good. I wouldn’t go to just anyone. Thanks for the kind warning.
Thank you so much for all your great info on oils. I really enjoy reading your posts!!
Hi Denitta, thank you so much for visiting and for reading.
Great info and ideas! I have many of the oils mentioned. I’ve noticed that peppermint oil seems to help my anxiety and depression a bit. Just using it in the diffuser seems to lift my mood.
Hi Terry, thanks so much for reading. Peppermint essential oil is amazing. I like to combine it with other oils too when the pain is bad, for that synergistic effect.
