Natural remedies have been used for thousands of years, probably ever since Adam and Eve had to leave the Garden of Eden. That’s when sickness and suffering became a reality. So some type of medicine was needed.
Before prescription and over-the-counter drugs, herbs are what people used for physical or emotional relief.
As we grow increasingly disillusioned with putting pills into our bodies, we are, once again, turning to “God’s pharmacy.”
Essential Oils from Biblical Times

People are discovering that natural, plant-based solutions can be effective. Essential oils are an increasing popular alternative to pharmaceuticals. I use essential oils instead of OTC medications. For me, they work really well. Plus, I don’t have to worry about potentially dangerous side effects.
Essential oils are also readily available and affordable, at least compared to money spent on doctor visits, lab tests and surgery.
These plant-based remedies have stood the best of time. Many of the plants they’re derived from are mentioned in the Bible. In recent years, a growing number of people have once again discovered essential oils. One of the most popular aromatics is frankincense essential oil. (I use it myself to tone my skin and as a natural anti-inflammatory agent.)
Essential Oils Mentioned in the Bible
The word “oil” is mentioned many times in the Bible. So this should give us a clue as to just how important it is.
For instance, in the Douay-Rheims version of the Book of Proverbs, Chapter 21, Verse 20, it says, “There is a treasure to be desired, and oil in the dwelling of the just, and a foolish man shall spend it.”
Also, in the Book of Saint James, Chapter 5, Verse 14 (Douay-Rheims), we read, “Is any man sick among you? Let him bring in the priests of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.”
Essential Oil References in the Bible
Throughout the Bible, many of the specific oils we use today are mentioned, including hyssop, spikenard, mentioned both in the Old and New Testaments, frankincense and myrrh, given as presents to Baby Jesus.
Plant-based remedies are once again popular, just as they were in Biblical times. It’s even possible to find essential oil sets made from Biblical oils, such as the frankincense, myrrh and spikenard gift set you see below. It’s made by Edens Garden, a company I trust enough to recommend to my readers. (Because I’ve used Edens Garden oils myself, and the quality is excellent.)

Healing With Frankincese
Frankincense back in Biblical times was more precious than gold. That’s likely because it has the ability to restore someone back to health. (Without your health, all the wealth in the world isn’t going to matter.) This is why this precious resin, which comes from the Boswellia tree, was seen as a fit gift for the three Wise Men to present to a newborn king.
It’s now believed this resin has the potential to heal the mind and body. Aromatherapists tell us that frankincense is a good oil to use if you’ve suffered emotional trauma, as it tends to “rewrite” our bad memories and help us move forward.
However, I do need to stress that I’m not a doctor. So I can’t give medical advice, or claim that any natural remedy will solve your health problems. But I can share information on how I use essential oils in my own life, including some of the ones mentioned in the Bible. In fact, frankincense and myrrh are among two of my favorite aromatics.
Essential Oils Found in the Bible
Frankincense is also considered good for fighting infections and inflammation. That’s why it’s sometimes included in modern essential oil blends designed to relieve pain.
Frankincense Essential Oil and Cancer
One of the most exciting things about frankincense oil is its potential to treat cancer. Laboratory studies conducted at the University of Oklahoma, have shown that one type of frankincense, produced by the Young Living company, has the ability to kill cancer cells. Even better, it appears to be totally non-toxic. It appears to have the innate ability to leave normal, healthy cells alone.
Health Benefits of Myrrh Essential Oil
Like frankincense, myrrh oil is also produced from a tree resin. Back in Biblical times, it was a precious commodity. One of the things it is known for is it’s ability to fight type of infection, and, throughout history, it has undoubtedly saved many lives.
Myrrh is considered good for helping to clear the lungs, if there’s a backup of phlegm. In the aromatherapy world, essential oil made from myrrh is sometimes recommended as a general health tonic. It’s believed to be able to stimulate your digestive and nervous systems.
Myrrh Oil For Your Face
One of my favorite uses for myrrh is as a skin toner. Myrrh is a precious oil. So the brand I used on my face was mixed with grapeseed oil. (Essential oils are too strong to put on your skin unless their diluted with a carrier. In this case, grapeseed oil was the carrier.) I loved what the combination of myrrh and grapseed oil did for my skin.
However, you can also find myrrh essential oil that’s not diluted, such as the 100 percent myrrh from Edens Garden on the right.

Health Benefits of Spikenard Oil
Spikenard is considered a calming oil. It comes from a plant that is native to India. It’s believed that spikenard can help reduce inflammation and emotional distress. Spikenard essential oil is sometimes used as a tonic for the nervous system. If you suffer from insomnia, this is one oil you may want to have in your collection.
This is also an oil often used for female complaints. It’s thought to have the ability to balance the hormones. As with other oils, spikenard probably contains natural infection-fighting compounds. Edens Garden also sells spikenard essential oil individually.
Galbanum Essential Oil Uses
One of the more uncommon essential oils in use today is galbanum. But it has a long history, dating back to antiquity. It was also mentioned in Book of Exodus. As a natural remedy, galbanum was believed to have been used by Hippocrates.
Today, galbanum essential oil is sold by a few companies, including Edens Garden. This aromatic is said to be good for relieving inflammation, reducing spasms and fighting germs, among other things. One reason to have an unusual oil in your aromatherapy collection is that it gives you the ability to rotate your oils. (For me, my oils work better when I don’t use them continuously.

Thanks
Hi David, I can’t recommend anything specifically for you because I’m not a medical professional. But many of the essential oil companies do sell specific relief blends, so you may want to start there. I wish you much better health in the coming year. I suffer from chronic nerve inflammation and I’ve used a multipronged approach to keeping this under control. I use a lot of natural remedies, including homeopathy, herbal anti-inflammatories and essential oils, and I don’t eat a lot of processed food, and I try to avoid GMOs. I’ve also had a lot of people praying for me. Thanks so much for reading.
