Essential Oils To Help Knee Pain

July 31, 2015 in Essential Oils

essential oils to help knee painEssential oils belong in your natural medicine cabinet. They contain natural analgesics and anti-inflammatory compounds. In our house, they’re used instead of over-the-counter pain relievers.

    Essential Oils for Knee Pain

(This post contains affiliate links. See my full disclosure here.)

Used correctly, aromatic pain relief formulas are much safer than ibuprofen and acetaminophen. Both of these drugs occasionally cause serious side effects. Although severe incidents are relatively rare, if something happens to you, statistics are meaningless.

I once met a woman who had developed Stevens-Johnson syndrome. This an uncommon, but often fatal, reaction to ibuprofen. The skin on her body blistered and peeled. She fought for her life. She was one of the fortunate survivors. However, she was left in poor health, and with unnaturally looking white skin, a result of autoimmune burns.

Once I met her, I started to see OTC drugs in a new light. They are potentially dangerous. Most people don’t know this.

Today, our family doesn’t even own OTC pain relievers. We tossed them in the trash can. When pain strikes, and we need relief, we use either herbs, homeopathy or essential oils. (Sometimes it’s a combination of all three.) For us, natural remedies seem work faster than medication. We also don’t have to worry about potential side effects.

    All Natural Knee Pain Relief

I suffer from chronic inflammation. It affects my nerves. It causes pains in my wrists, on the lower right side of my body and in my left knee. At one point, this condition was much worse. I could barely walk. With the help of natural remedies, today I’m nearly pain free. Even better, I’m able to take long walks again.

A big part of my health maintenance plan involves essential oils for pain. When knee problems arise, they’re one of the first thing I reach for.

Please understand that I’m not a doctor. So I can’t give medical advice or claim that any natural remedy will work for anyone else. I’m also not suggesting you treat knee pain solely with essential oils, without first ruling out any potentially serious underlying causes. All I’m doing is sharing my own story of how I treat my knee pain naturally.

Essential Oils To Help Knee Pain

Many companies sell essential oils. Some independent distributors make fantastic claims. The truth is that, yes, essential oils are really helpful, at least for me. But they likely work best when used as part of an overall healthy lifestyle.

Inflammation is a killer, literally. Most alternative doctors believe it’s the common thread that runs through all diseases, including heart attacks, arthritis, diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis and cancer. The Standard American Diet is filled with inflammation-promoting foods, such as dairy. Clean eating and avoiding processed foods, along with various herbal remedies to reduce inflammation, seem to make it easier for essential oils to do their work. At least that’s been my experience.

Essential Oils for Knee Pain and Swelling

Many of the oils contain strong anti-inflammatory agents as well as natural pain relievers. Some of the oils most widely used for relieving pain are found in the mint and evergreen families. Eucalyptus and clove are also considered good at dulling discomfort.

A number of companies now sell blends designed for pain relief. These include multiple oils in one bottle. Aromatherapists typically recommend blends because of the increased effectiveness of multiple oils working together. This same same type of synergy is also seen in herbal medicine.

Please note though, that swelling often accompanies knee pain. Do not rely upon essential oils alone for swelling. Get it checked out by a doctor, to rule out serious problems. Then ask if you can use an essential oil blend for relief.

Essential Oil Blends for Knee Pain

A number of aromatherapy companies have developed recipes, made with multiple oils, specifically for pain relief.

I buy many of my oils from Plant Therapy, a family-run business based in Idaho. It makes excellent oils that are 100 percent pure and sourced from farmers around the world. (It’s widely believed the best oils come from plants grown in their native environments.) None of its oils have added chemicals. Plant Therapy also works with world-famous aromatherapy expert Robert Tisserand.

Rapid Relief Synergy Blend for Natural Pain Control

The Plant Therapy Rapid Relief Synergy Blend shown below contains peppermint, clove, bay laurel, black pepper, ginger, cinnamon, chamomile, thyme and juniper. One bottle will likely last a long time. That’s because it needs to be diluted in olive oil or another carrier oil before application. The standard dilution ratio is one drop of aromatic oil to a teaspoon of carrier. This can then be massaged into the skin.

    Natural Pain Management Strategies

I view essential oil pain relief blends as safe, low impact natural interventions. But they don’t address the underlying cause of pain and inflammation. That’s why I don’t rely upon them solely. Instead, I  follow a fairly strict all natural pain relief protocol.

So many people ask me what I’ve done in order to get healthy again. It’s an impossible question to answer. That’s because I used a very wide range of healing methods, herbs and other remedies. Instead of trying to remember everything off the top of my head, instead, over the course of months, I added it to an easy-to-follow online course. This course contains more than 20 videos, as well as text. And I often add more information. If you’d like to learn what worked for me, click on the image below.

I can’t promise anyone will have similar results. But this course does provide a wealth of information on the natural healing methods I used.

It’s a good idea to use multiple essential oils together, because of the synergy effect. That’s why blends are so popular. So here’s another pain relief recipe.

1 teaspoon of carrier oil (It’s available here)

1 drop of peppermint essential oil (It’s available here)

1 drop of ginger essential oil (It’s available here)

Hi Becky, that’s a great question. I don’t recommend ingesting any essential oils from any company because of the potential risks. Plant Therapy oils are 100 percent pure, just like the large MLM brands. They are thoroughly tested. But I don’t recommend ingesting them because essential oils are so strong. I read somewhere that ingesting one drop of peppermint oil would be like drinking anywhere from 15 to 70 cups of peppermint tea. They are so strong that they need to be diluted to 2 percent with a carrier oil just to put them on your skin. Professional aromatherapists generally do not recommend ingesting at all. One group of aromatherapists believes there may be specific instances where it’s appropriate, but only if working with a well-trained medical professional. Plant Therapy has some good information on its website about essential oil safety. I’d totally ignore the advice from anyone who is selling oils who also tells you to ingest them. I will never forget the person who told me about her extreme reaction to lemon essential oil, which she added to her bath water. Be safe and use them the right way. Thanks so much for reading my blog.

What is the dilution required for the rapid relief?

A good rule of thumb recommended by professional aromatherapists is a 2 percent dilution. This is 3 drops of essential oil to 1 teaspoon of carrier oil. This needs to be cut in half for the frail or elderly. Rapid Relief is not good for children under 10.
