If I tried to tell you I know how Bach Flower Essences work, I’d be lying.
The truth is no one really knows exactly how they work.
But they seem to do the job quite well.
These essences are gentle homeopathic-like essences made from flowers.
They were created in the last century by a physician named Dr. Edward Bach, MD.
He spent long hours scouting for flowers and observing the psychological effect they had, when he held them in his hands.

This led him to develop a line of remedies made exclusively from flowers.
However, Bach remedies are designed to be gentler than regular homeopathic remedies.
It’s also believed they are less likely to cause unpleasant aggravations.
Dr. Bach didn’t think it was necessary to experience an intensification of symptoms in order to heal.
This is what can happen in traditional homeopathy, especially if you take one too many doses.
I’ve used both regular homeopathic remedies and Bach flower essences. They seem to have different effects.
So peole take them for different reasons.
For instance, if you have a cold, don’t take flower essences.
Instead, regular remedies can zero in on symptoms.
However, someone consumed with vague worries, which aren’t too distressing or limiting, I can turn to Bach formulas.
More severe emotional responses need regular homeopathy.
Bach Flower Remedies Do They Work?
Dr. Bach’s life work convinced him that negative emotions can make you sick. His flower essences are meant to restore peace to our troubled minds, hopefully, with a corresponding reduction in physical symptoms.
However, please understand I’m not a doctor, just a certified homeopathic educator, nor am I promising you’ll get well by taking one or more of these remedies. I’m simply passing along historical information on the work of Dr. Bach.
People with severe depression should seek professional care.
If you’re interested in learning more about his flower remedies, and how to take them, The Encyclopedia of Bach Flower Therapy is a good place to start. I’ve been using these remedies for nearly 25 years, after a very knowledgeable chiropractor told me about them.

Flower Essence Therapy
In recent years, there’s been an increased interest in Dr. Bach’s findings, at least among people looking for more natural health solutions, which don’t involve drugs.
Most of the 38 flower essences are single remedies. Dr. Bach believed these are sufficient to handle any emotional state. That’s because they can be combined, to form a customized treatment plan. The remedies are so gentle and simple that it’s possible to use them on your own.
However, my own homeopath told me to take only what’s needed, and not to take another dose until my symptoms reappear. She recommended this both for Bach flowers and regular homeopathic remedies.
Rescue Remedy, one of Dr. Bach’s blends, is probably the best-known of all his flower essences. It’s a combination of five flowers designed to alleviate stress and cushion the shock of hearing bad news. I’ve suffered from insomnia for much of my adult life. This is one of the things that has helped. It’s designed to be taken short term, in an acute stress situation, the kind you find yourself in when you first receive shocking or devastating news.

Recently, after learning something very distressing, I took a dose. I know the remedy won’t change the situation. But it has changed my response. I now look at it as something God will take care of, in His own time. I’m more at peace with what’s going on. Good will eventually triumph, even though I can’t yet see the outcome.
So, even though I can’t explain how these essences work, I can tell you that I’ve been really happy with the results. They seem to have helped so much, since I tend to suffer from worries and anxieties.
Right now, there’s even a little bit of clinical evidence showing that flower essences can help mitigate the effects of mild to moderate depression. However, much more research is needed.
