Celiac disease has been on the rise for a number of years. Also increasing in incidence is the number of people who have developed a sensitivity to gluten, a protein found in wheat, rye and in certain other grains as well.
Unfortunately, if you’re sensitive to this protein, you have to check your cosmetics carefully. That’s because wheat is often hiding in women’s beauty products.

The good news, though, is that it’s become increasingly possible to find gluten free cosmetics, especially if you shop online.

Through the centuries, wheat has been selectively bred. Today’s wheat bears little resemblance to the wheat our ancestors ate, because the modern crop contains many more times the amount of gluten than did an ancient variety. This fact has even led some health experts, such as Dr. William Davis, MD, to recommend that we don’t eat wheat, as he believes it can lead to a number of health problems, including autoimmune disease.
Dr. Davis has even written a book called Wheat Belly, in which he explains how wheat is a culprit behind a lot of our ailments.
Some people have even become so sensitive to wheat that they can’t even be near it. Nor can they use a face powder, foundation, eye shadow or mascara that contains wheat.
This is something I’ve experienced first hand. When my youngest child was a toddler, he was so sensitive to wheat that I couldn’t bring him to a certain grocery store, because it had a bakery.
Fortunately, a number of gluten-free cosmetics are now available, and they seem to work just as well as products formulated with wheat.
Gluten Free Eye Makeup
Physicians Formula Eye Shadow Shimmer Strips, shown below, are gluten-free. These colors are also made without fragrance and they also contain no parabens. This is another bonus, as this group of chemicals are found in many beauty products. Parabens mimic the female hormone estrogen. So there’s growing concern they could be linked to breast cancer.
These Shimmer Strips shadows are designed for people with sensitive eyes and are formulated to be hypoallergenic.
This shadow set contains nine colors. They can be blended together to create even more unique neutral shades. The shadows seen here come with gluten-free mascara and eye liner.
By the way, I love Physicians Formula mascara because it also doesn’t contain toxic heavy metals, such as mercury, found in some other brands. (Believe it or not, it’s legal to add mercury to mascara.) I also love how it stays on my eyelashes without flaking.

Women who have a sensitivity to wheat must be careful when choosing a facial powder, or foundation. It was difficult to find a powder without gluten, as well as hormone-disrupting parabens or talc, which has been linked to ovarian cancer when used as a body powder.
But there are some choices available. One is Au Naturale, a loose powder that contains no gluten, and no nano particles, parabens, bismuth oxycholoride, red lake dyes, chromium oxide green or carmine. This powder is made in America.

Gluten Free Makeup Foundation
Juice Beauty Perfecting Foundation gives you perfect coverage without all the chemicals. Instead of parabens, sodium lauryl sulfate, dyes, fragrances and petroleum, this smooth-finishing foundation is partially made from organic grape seed, which is a potent antioxidant. Organic aloe vera is added as a moisturizer and a nutrient. Other ingredients include minerals, acai, goji and other berries, which add color, but also double as antioxidants.
This foundation, of course, also contains no gluten.

Gluten Free Mascara Brands
When you are trying to avoid gluten, it truly does seem as if it’s in everything. Even some brands of mascara include wheat as an ingredient. However, Physician’s Formula Organic Wear 100 Percent Natural Origin Mascara doesn’t contain wheat.
Nor does it contain potentially toxic chemicals you may not want to put near your eyes, such as parabens or artificial colors and fragrances. As I mentioned earlier, it also contains no mercury. When I called the company, a customer service representative assured me Physicians Formula mascara is made without this toxic heavy metal.
Right now, because I’m eating a healthy diet filled with organic foods, my skin has improved to the point that I no longer need to wear foundation. But I can’t live without my mascara. Unfortunately, many brands are formulated with mercury, a toxin that doesn’t belong anywhere near our bodies.
This mascara is my very favorite because it doesn’t run as easily as some of the other brands I’ve tried, even those made with chemicals, and designed for long wear.
