Most of the corn grown in the United States is genetically modified. This means it’s been designed to survive being sprayed with Roundup. This herbicide is made by Monsanto.
Normally, Roundup would kill a corn stalk. That’s why genetic engineering is needed.
There’s evidence the active ingredient in Roundup, a chemical called glyphosate, is now found throughout the environment, in low concentrations, at least in the United States.

So what’s the connection between Roundup and most of the Halloween candy sold in the America?
Read on and I’ll explain. Fortunately it’s also possible to find a growing selection of organic Halloween candy. These candies do not contain GMOs, grown from plants doused in Roundup.
Halloween Candy Without High Fructose Corn Syrup
Candy is often loaded with high-fructose corn syrup. This is an unnatural ingredient that, over time, can lead to liver damage and other serious complications, according to
To make matter worse, corn syrup may be processed in a way that allows mercury to enter the mix. This can happen if the syrup processed with caustic soda.
Why You Want Your Kids To Eat Organic Halloween Candy
Then there’s the issue of genetic modification. The vast majority of corn grown in the United States is derived from genetically modified seed. Interestingly, Russia has banned imports of American-grown corn for this reason. So, in addition to potential mercury contamination, high-fructose corn syrup likely comes from corn sprayed with Roundup.
Halloween Candy Soy Free
In the United States, most soy is genetically modified. Soy lecithin is often found as a filler in chocolate candies. Soy crops have been found to contain high levels of pesticides. Luckily, you can also find organic Halloween chocolate candy.
The jury is still out on whether genetically modified food is dangerous. But one team of doctors in France has found a connection between GMOs and breast cancer in animals. This research was conducted at the University of Caen.
Two Swedish oncologists also believe they’ve found evidence that Roundup can cause lymphoma. Their findings were published in the March 1999 edition of the Journal of the American Cancer Society.
High-fructose corn syrup is widely used in candy. That’s because it’s cheaper than using refined sugar. However, sugar is a concern as well. There’s a good chance this ingredient comes from genetically modified sugar beet.
Where to Buy Organic Halloween Candy?
Organic alternatives exist for nearly every type of commercial candy on the market. Choices seem to be expanding in response in increased consumer demand.
You can now find lollipops, candy drops and peanut butter cups made without refined sugar, high-fructose corn syrup or other genetically modified ingredients.
If you buy Halloween candy off the shelves, it most likely contains something that’s genetically engineered. However, this isn’t the case with candy stamped with the USDA Certified Organic label, or if you see a logo that says “Non GMO Project.”
Below you’ll see a small selection of certified organic candy. But other varieties are also available.

If you’re concerned about overall sugar consumption, you may want to substitute other snacks.
Holistic health experts have been ringing alarm bells over the surreal amounts of sweets each child typically eats at Halloween.
Just how much candy is consumed? A lot, because sales of Halloween treats now exceed $2.6 billion dollars a year, according to the National Confectioners Association.
You can find an assortment of non-candy Halloween treats online as well, such as the Stretch Island organic grape fruit leather and the Stretch Island organic fruit leather variety pack shown on the right. When my own children were little, they had food allergies and sensitivities. Stretch Island was a literal lifesaver. The fruit leather strips are so delicious. So I could use these as treats when everyone else was eating candy.
