Holy Basil tea is a delicious way to enjoy the benefits of this traditional Ayurvedic herb, which is also known as “tulsi.”

For centuries, tulsi has been used in tradition Indian medicine. It appears to have wide ranging effects on the body, and it’s considered an “adaptogen.” This means it’s a plant that’s believed to offer protection from stress. Adaptogens seem to exert a calming influence on the mind. That’s why holy basil tulsi tea is a popular bed time drink.
Tulsi Tea and Inflammation
Because I suffer from nerve inflammation, tulsi is something I take nearly every day, in one form or another. I take a natural anti-inflammatory capsule that contains this amazing botanical. Occasionally, at night, I drink tulsi tea. In addition to being delicious, it seems to help me sleep.
If you’re interested in adding tulsi to your natural health regimen, talk with your health practitioner about how to take it. Some herbalists believe tea is one of the most effective ways of taking an herbal preparation, as the warm water is easily assimilated into the body.

Tulsi tea is something I’ve written about before. I like to remind people of its existence. We’re living in very stressful times. We’re also exposed to a growing array of environmental toxins. Don’t even get me started on the issue of genetically modified foods, which are sprayed with increasing amounts of a controversial herbicide called glyphosate.
However, there’s some good news too. We now have access to a vast array of natural remedies from all around the world, including tulsi. This plant is considered so beneficial, on so many levels, that it’s called “The Queen of Herbs” in traditional Indian medicine. Modern research is beginning to confirm why this plant is so highly regarded.
One paper published in the Journal of Ayurveda Integrative Medicine labeled holy basil as “A herb for all reasons.” It described some of its wide-ranging applications, noting “There is mounting evidence that tulsi can address physical, chemical, metabolic and psychological stress through a unique combination of pharmacological actions.”
What is Tulsi Tea Good For?
I use tulsi tea is as a sleep aid. For years, I suffered from chronic insomnia. But I’ve found great relief with natural remedies, including essential oils and herbal tea. I give a lot of credit to the aromatic oils I use just before bedtime. But I can’t discount the various herbal remedies I’ve taken.
Tulsi is often recommended for people with adrenal fatigue, which has been one of my problems. This condition often causes sleep problems. My insomnia has resolved itself as my adrenals have recovered. If you’re not familiar with adrenal fatigue, I can tell you that many holistic healers believe this condition is widespread and is triggered by stress.
Please understand that I’m not a healthcare professional. So I can’t give any sort of medical advice. Also, I want to make it clear that I’m not saying tulsi is a cure for adrenal fatigue. But I do believe it’s one of the many things that have aided my recover.
Tulsi and Lavender Tea
All of the types of tulsi teas I’ve tried are packed with other herbs. There’s a reason for this. It’s believed that herbal recipes, consisting of multiple herbs, creates a powerful synergy.
My favorite brand of tulsi is Stash, which is made with lavender. Lavender is often used as a sleep aid. You don’t taste the lavender as much as the overwhelming basil flavor of tulsi. But there are hints of it. This tea is so delicious.
If you decide to drink holy basil tea, I highly recommend getting a brand that’s organic. This removes any concerns about pesticide and herbicide contamination. Although you can’t tell from the picture below, this tea is USDA certified organic.
Is Tulsi Green Tea Good for Health?
The Journal of Ayurveda Integrative Medicine published a paper on the extensive benefits of tulsi. It noted that, out of all the various herbs used in Indian Ayurvedic medicine, holy basil is “preeminent.”
The authors compiled a list of the known actions of tulsi, which include:
- This herb appears to be able to help regulate and normalize blood sugar and blood pressure. These markers are often elevated in response to stress.
- Holy basil contains antimicrobial compounds, and has been shown to be effective against bacteria, fungi and viruses, according to the authors. In animals, it’s been shown to work as an immune system booster.
- In animals, tulsi helps with wound healing.
- Animal research has shown that tulsi functions as a natural anti-depressant. It also appears to be good for the memory. Animals who’ve taken tulsi have demonstrated improved cognitive function.
- The primary reason I take tulsi is because of its natural anti-inflammatory compounds. Most holistic healers believe excess inflammation is what fuels the disease process. Reducing it leads to better health. This herb is widely regarded as an excellent natural remedy for inflammation.
- Tulsi appears to act as a mental balm. The paper noted that research on animals has shown that tulsi has actions very similar to some of the commonly used medications to treat depression.
- Perhaps most importantly, the authors pointed out that tulsi is generally recommended by Ayurvedic practitioners as a remedy to prevent disease.
