Chronic stress takes a toll on your adrenal glands. Or, at least that’s what alternative medical experts tell us.
Your adrenals are located on top of your kidneys. They secrete various hormones, some of which are essential to life.
These glands also make adrenaline. This hormone helps us respond to danger. Under normal circumstances, this is a good thing. Adrenaline production ramps up when we’re threatened. For instance, If we’re walking down the road, and a speeding car is approaching, a rush of adrenaline enables us to jump to safety.
However, low-level stress, which that continues over a period of time, makes the adrenals work harder. This can lead to adrenal fatigue, according to some holistic practitioners. Recovery generally involves watching your diet and trying to reduce stress. It can take time to bounce back from adrenal exhaustion.
Symptoms can include fatigue, mental exhaustion, poor concentration, backache, muscle pain, decreased resistance to infection and inability to sleep. A regular physician probably won’t diagnose you with “adrenal fatigue,” That’s because this condition is not really recognized by mainstream medicine.

If you suffer from adrenal fatigue, a holistic healer might recommend one or more adaptogens. These are plants with a reputation of being able to support our bodies during physical or mental stress. Long used in traditional Asian medicine, these herbs are now becoming popular in the West.
On a physical level, adaptogens are thought to stabilize our hormones. Stress takes a huge toll on our body, and various imbalances are the end result.
It’s thought these herbs can help even out the excesses. As that begins to happen, we start to feel better. We’re then better withstand the shocks of life that invariably come our way. Modern life is complicated, and, oftentimes, there’s no way to escape the pressure. Some people take adaptogens with the purpose of mitigating the effects of stress.

I’ve been diagnosed with adrenal fatigue by two different practitioners. At one point, I suffered from so much inflammation that it was difficult walking across the room.
However, with the help of God, and all of the wonderful remedies He’s created, I’ve regained my health.
Throughout my struggle, I’ve taken a number of adaptogenic herbs. I plan to take various herbal remedies for the rest of my life, just for maintenance.
Sometimes, I drink a special tea made from holy basil leaves. Some people call this traditional Indian medicinal plant tulsi. I sip this tea right before I go to bed because it seems to helps me sleep better.
