Nausea and vomiting respond really well to homeopathic remedies.
You just have to match the remedy to the person’s state.
Stomach flu is one of the easiest things to treat.
Because a handful of remedies covers most cases.
So you don’t have to sift through thousands of potential choices.
It’s good to know the basic stomach flu remedies, along with some of the most common indications for them.
Because nausea and vomiting are just plain miserable.
But with the right remedy you can quickly feel better.
But please note.
Right after taking a remedy you may vomit.
This is a good sign.
It means your body is clearing the pathogen or toxin out of your system.
Also, please note that I’m talking about run-of-the-mill stomach flu.
Severe nausea and vomiting may need medical attention.
You’ll also need to seek allopathic care if you can’t manage to find the right remedy in a timely manner.
Especially when dealing with a small child or an elderly person.

- Arsenicum – In my own house I’ve never had to use another remedy for stomach flu. Because Arsenicum works so well. This is the number one homeopathic remedy for food poisoning. (Or any kind of poisoning.) Sometimes it’s hard to tell if you have a stomach flu. Or you just ate food that’s gone bad. However, the end result is misery. People who need Arsenicum can have nasty stuff coming out of both ends. Typically they has no appetite. Even the sight or smell of food makes them queasy. They may want to take sips of water. Or they may be thirsty. But the water quickly comes back up. They may crave ice cold water, similar to Phosphorus. Or they may want warm tea. Children in an Arsenicum state may want their parents nearby. Adults may think the people around them aren’t doing enough for them. Restlessness is often part of the picture. Sometimes the gastric upset comes at the end of an upper respiratory flu. Arsenicum pains are often described as “burning” and the patient may experience intestinal cramps. This remedy will cover the vast majority of cases. The person will probably feel very sick.
- Nux Vomica – Nausea and vomiting may be accompanied by a terrible headache. Or the person may desperately want to vomit but can’t. If they can vomit they feel better. A Nux Vomica state often happens after overindulging in food and drink. Diarrhea may be present. Or the person may be constipated. (Persistent vomiting with constipation that doesn’t resolve with homeopathy needs prompt medical attention.) Food that’s eaten may feel as if it’s still sitting in the stomach. Someone who needs this remedy may be extremely irritable and hypersensitive to noise. You may hear them yelling from the bedroom to “turn the television down” or “stop talking so loud.”
- Ipecac – This is another top nausea and vomiting remedy. The patient may have a strong aversion to food and drinks. Even the thought of eating something may make him groan. This state might have been triggered by eating too many rich foods. The stomach may spasm and the person may be in pain. His face may be very pale, and the facial muscles may twitch. Vomiting does not relieve the nausea. The tongue of someone who needs this remedy is often described as “clean.” This means it’s not coated white, tan or yellow. Instead it looks like a healthy pink tongue. The patient will likely feel best in open air and worse in a warm stuffy room.
- Veratrum Album – This remedy can look a lot like Arsenicum. Only the person is probably a lot sicker and chillier. The skin may have a bluish tinge. (Please seek emergency help if homeopathy isn’t working.) Diarrhea may be profuse and there’s a danger of dehydration. The vomiting may also be intense. Like Arsenicum the person may say their stomach “burns.” Liquids will probably worsen the nausea, as will the least motion. The person will feel very weak, especially after vomiting. Symptoms can come on very suddenly.
- Phosphorus – This can look very similar to Arsenicum with anxiety, as well as nausea and vomiting. The person may want sympathy, similar to Pulsatilla. Arsenicum patients generally like you fussing over them. Consider this remedy if Arsenicum doesn’t work and the person craves ice cold drinks, which are vomited up quickly. Like Arsenicum the person may lose fluids from both ends.
- China – One sign that points to this remedy is what’s called a “tympanitic abdomen.” This means the belly is distended and extremely taut. Diarrhea may be severe and watery. The person will likely be weak and dehydrated. He may have to get out of bed to rush to the bathroom. This is also a good remedy post diarrhea and vomiting to help recover from fluid loss. Often someone who needs this remedy is irritable, similar to Nux Vomica.
- Eupatorium – I’ve never used this remedy for stomach flu. Or even considered it. Until a well-known US-based homeoapth said on a podcast that it’s her number two remedy, right after Arsenicum. Arsenicum, she noted, will work for 90 percent of cases.
- Oukubaka – Never heard of this? It’s a little used remedy that’s gaining fame as a back up to Arsenicum. It’s a good remedy to have on hand if you have a stomach bug and Arsenicum fails you. Symptoms look a lot like Arsenicum, which will usually be given first.
Fortunately the vast majority of cases will respond to Arsenicum Album, which is found in the popular Helios 36-remedy family kits.
Obviously there are many more possible choices than those listed here. Just about every remedy in our homeopathic Materia Medica covers nausea and vomiting. If Arsenicum fails, this is where a professional homeopath can come in handy.
Always do Minimum Dosing to prevent the case from becoming clouded, and to offset unnecessary aggravations.
