For most of my adult life, I hid behind a sheet of opaque foundation. My face was blotchy. So I felt the need to cover it up.
Then, something changed. I know longer need to wear makeup. Now that I’m a middle-aged Mom, my skin now has a healthier glow, compared to how I looked years ago.
So, what happened?
For one, I cleaned up my diet. I did away with all that junk food I used to love and thought I couldn’t live without. Then, I got rid of my chemical cosmetics. All of them went in the trash. I don’t miss them either. That’s because I’ve found plant-based substitutes that work just as well, it not a whole lot better, than the junk I was putting on my skin.

Looking back at the years I spent covering up my blotchy skin, I’m convinced that my cosmetics were at least partly to blame. No matter what I did, I had blotchy red skin around the corners of my mouth. It became worse in the winter. So I tried to fight it with chemical moisturizers. But they didn’t touch the problem.
Only when I stopped using chemicals, and started putting natural ingredients on my face, did I notice a visible difference. Today, I use plant-based products, such as frankincense essential oil. Apparently, this is a time-tested beauty secret. I even heard that Cleopatra used frankincense to maintain her looks. (Obviously, I have no way of verifying this story.)
Also, I can’t promise that any natural remedy or product will give the same results. But I can pass along my own natural beauty tips, and encourage other women to find safe plant-based skin solutions.

But I love what frankincense essential oil does for my own face. Since it’s so strong, I mix it with a carrier, such as avocado oil, before using it. In addition to frankincense, I use other aromatic oils, as well as carrier oils on my face. That’s because these natural beauty products seem to work better if they’re rotated. Or, at least that’s what I find.
For instance, frankincense oil might give my face a beautiful glow for about a week, if I use it continuously. Then I need to switch to something else, such as palmarosa essential oil. Palmarose is a tropical grass, and the aromatic oil derived from this plant is considered an excellent skin remedy. You’ll often find it as an ingredient in natural cosmetics.

Anyway, below you can see two of the types of essential oils I’ve used on my own face. I love how they seemed to immediatley improve my skin tone. Although I can’t promise anyone else will see the same results, I can share how I use essential oils in my own life. They’ve replaced so many of the potentially toxic compounds I once used.

I was horrified to realize that I once put parabens on my skin. These chemicals are classified as hormone disruptors. That’s because they mimic the female hormone estrogen. They’ve also been tentatively linked to breast cancer. Although this association isn’t conclusively proven, I’ve stopped using anything with parabens.
Parabens are added to many women’s products. I avoid them by using plant-based substitutes. Remember how I told you that chemical moisturizers did nothing to alleviate my dryness and irritation? Anyway, this problem stopped once I switched to natural emollients, such as coconut oil and pure avocado oil, both of which you can see below.
Natural Face Mask for Glowing Skin
It’s really easy to make your own face mask to give your skin that healthy glow. Many things that are good for you are also good for your face. For instance, you can make a natural face mask from Manuka honey. This is harvested in New Zealand, and contains more nutrients than regular honey.
My favorite DIY face mask is one made with natural volcanic clay. Clay is so easy to use. All you do is wet it with a little spring water and apply this mixture to your face. I leave it on my face for about 10 minutes. People with sensitive skin may want to do a test on a small area of their face first. It makes sense to use a Bentonite clay mask right before you shower. I’m convinced that what you eat will eventually show up on your face. I think this is a lesson I learned the hard way. For most of my adult life, I ate all kinds of junk. Eventually, my unhealthy diet seemed to catch up with me, in the form of chronic nerve inflammation.
I cleaned up my diet around the same time I threw away the chemical concoctions masquerading as “beauty” products. Since then, I’ve devoted a lot of time to telling other women that they don’t have to risk their health.
How to Just Eat Real Food Recipes
On this site, I also encourage my readers to eat real food made without GMOs. This isn’t as hard as it seems, once you get used to the idea of cooking from scratch.
