    Is Shatavari Good For Fertility?

October 13, 2016 in Herbal remedies

is shatavari good for fertilityShatavari is a tradition Indian Ayurvedic remedy for women who’ve had trouble getting pregnant.

Natural fertility treatments have been used for ages. In recent years, they seem to be making a comeback.

Modern scientific research shows that some of these time-tested herbal formulas do work as intended. They can actually help bring new life into the world. For example, one study showed that one-third of the women who took a blend containing chasteberry conceived within six months. Chasteberry, or vitex, has long been considered a good fertility remedy.

    Shatavari and Fertility

Another herb that’s believed to be good for conception is shatavari, scientifically known as Asparagus racemosus. I was unable to find information on clinical trials with humans. This would involve giving one group of women shatavari, while another group took a placebo.

However, according to the International Journal of Pharmaceutical & Biological Archives, shatavari is “the main Ayurvedic rejuvenative tonic for the females.”

    Shatavari to Increase Fertility?

Please understand that I’m not a doctor or an herbalist. So I can’t give medical advice or make any claims that a particular remedy will yield the desired results. All I can do is pass along previously published information, so my readers can make their own choices. (On a personal level, I also struggled with infertility and multiple miscarriages. So, if this information can help anyone else, I’ll be really happy.)

Benefits of Ashwaganda and Shatavari for Conceiving a Baby

Not being able to conceive is a problem that’s as old as time. Through the ages, depending upon what part of the world you lived in, various plant-based remedies offered a potential solution. For instance, maca root is a traditional Andean fertility remedy. Chasteberry has long been used in the Mediterranean region. And shatavari comes from the Indian subcontinent. Other herbs, such as ashwaganda, traditionally have also been used to increase the odds of conception, both for men and for women.

Fortunately, we live in a time when it’s possible to obtain herbal remedies from all over the world. This is a blessing, since different remedies work better for some people than they do for others.

In addition to shatavari (you can see organic shatavari on the left, I also wanted to include a popular fertility blend with chasteberry below, as well as organic maca powder.

    Is Shatavari Good for Fertility?

In addition to its longstanding use as a female reproductive tonic, there is some evidence that shatavari may reduce pelvic adhesions. One common problem standing in the way of conception is endometriosis. It’s believed this condition reduces fertility, partly because it can result in scar tissue.

    Shatavari Fertility Benefits

One study involving animals, published in the Journal of Postgraduate Medicine, found that shatavari significantly reduced the formation of intraperitoneal adhesions in rats. Although we can’t automatically conclude it has the same effect in humans, it does show one possible way that shatavari may potentially increase the odds of conception.

Shatavari is also considered an adaptogen. This means it’s a plant that’s considered good for people undergoing stress. (If you’ve read this far, you probably don’t need me to tell you that infertility can be extremely stressful.)

    Shatavari Herb for Fertility

High tech treatment does not work for everyone. Also, it’s expensive and not covered by insurance. Some couples may opt out of assisted reproduction for religious reasons.

As I mentioned earlier, shatavari is just one natural fertility remedy. So, if you’re trying to conceive, you may also be interested in reading about other remedies often used to increase the odds of conceiving a child.

For instance, it’s believed that various bee products can enhance both male and female fertility. You can learn more about the potential fertility-enhancing effects of bee pollen, bee propolis and royal jelly here.

How to Use Shatavari Power for Fertility

So, if you’re trying to conceive naturally, I highly recommend working with an experienced herbalist. This practitioner can treat both members of the couple. It’s also likely he or she will suggest other lifestyle changes as well, such as switching from junk food to real food. For instance, another Indian herb, Ashwagandha churna, has long been considered a good remedy for increasing male fertility, something that’s also supported by some modern research.

Ashwagandha is also considered a good stress remedy, and is often recommended to enhance female fertility.
