At different points in my life, my hair has gotten thinner.
Always following a period of intense emotional stress.
Then my hair grew back. As if nothing had happened.
The last time this happened was a couple of years ago.
I noticed more hair than usual at the bottom of the shower, after every shampoo. Even worse, I noticed less hair on the top of my head.
This time, I wasn’t taking any chances. I didn’t want to wait to see if my hair would grow back as thick as it used to be.
The thinning spot on top of my head was distressing.
So I decided to become proactive.
There was a special essential oil recipe I already knew about. It has been scientifically proven to help stop thinning and boost new growth.
Then there are hair loss shampoos. I quickly ordered some all natural plant-based hair loss shampoo, along with a hair loss conditioner.
Attacking the problem from two different angles, I believed, would offer the best results.
Is There A Way To Prevent Hair Loss?

So I started with the special essential oil recipe. I already had most of the oils I needed on hand.
I ordered red thyme essential oil because the recipe called for it, and I didn’t already own it.
You can read more about this recipe here, in an earlier post on Essential Oils for Hair Loss.
I also started using a special hair loss shampoo and conditioner made by Pura d’Or. I started with the company’s premium gold version. I liked it.
But, then, I tried the regular blue version and liked it even better. Because my hair seemed more manageable after using the blue version.
Even though this shampoo is all natural it is a little harsh. So you always need to use it with the conditioner. Use these two products together and you end up with manageable shiny hair.
But does these products work?
I think they do.
Just like the company explained, initial use may cause a little more thinning. This is the result of unhealthy growth being removed. I guess to make room for new growth. (Apparently, this initial thinning happens with hair loss drugs too.)
Then, slowly, my hair started growing in again.
After a few months the thinning that had me worried had resolved. (Maybe it would have anyway, without the shampoo. But I wasn’t taking any chances.)
Can You Prevent Hair Loss?
Even though my hair has grown back, I’ve continued to use hair loss shampoo and conditioner.
For two reasons.
One is because this formula is natural. With no sulfates or parabens.
Parabens mimic the female hormone estrogen. So there’s concern they may fuel a hormone driven cancer. (This theory has not been proven. But I still feel it’s a good idea to avoid parabens.)
Here’s the second reason.
Every time I stop using this shampoo I seem to notice more hair collecting in the shower basin. Maybe it’s just my imagination. But why take the chance, when I’m seeing good results.
So I plan to continue using Pura d’Or Hair Loss Shampoo and conditioner indefinitely.
If you can’t find Pura d”Or shampoo and conditioner locally, they’re available online.
Ways To Prevent Hair Loss
There are other potential natural ways to attack hair loss as well. One is with with herbal remedies, which you can read about here.
Another is with good nutrition.
This is an area currently being studied. As it’s known that various micro nutrients are needed for a healthy follicle cycle.
However, more studies are needed before we can say conclusively what role certain nutrients play in hair growth.
Right now, no one can say conclusively that good nutrition will help your hair. But we do know that nutrients are needed to maintain healthy locks.
Until the research is finished, it certainly can’t hurt to eat a healthy diet filled with real food, instead of processed junk. This is what we all should be doing anyway.
Because it’s so difficult to get all of our nutrients from food, about once a week I take a multivitamin made from food sources. Real food vitamins contains the micro nutrients we need, in just the right amounts.
If you can’t find whole food vitamins locally, they are available online. I buy the Megafoods brand natural vitamins, formulated by a well known natural minded medical doctor.
Can Stress Make You Lose Hair?
A lot of people are under extreme stress. Unfortunately, stress is linked to hair loss.
So it goes without saying that reducing stress is a really good idea if you see your hair thinning.
One of my favorite natural stress busters is an exercise I do known as “tapping.” This involves “tapping” on certain meridians located on my head, shoulders and torso.
Although I can’t claim that tapping will help with hair growth, it’s one of the things I do to keep my own stress in check.
Do Hair Loss Drugs Work?
Hair loss drugs can work. But, personally, they would be my very last resort.
I’ve had good success with natural remedies.
Also, hair loss drugs have a laundry list of side effects. These can include increased facial hair, dizziness, irregular heartbeat, blurred vision and rapid weight gain. (Make sure to see a doctor for any of these symptoms.)
So even if natural remedies for hair loss didn’t exist, I’m not sure sure I’d take Minoxidil.
Fortunately, I don’t have to worry about that.
Because natural hair loss remedies work for me.
