For many years, I covered my blotchy skin with liquid foundation. Because of my uneven skin tone, I didn’t want to leave the house without my cover.
But it wasn’t always this way. As a teenager, I had a decent complexion. But I started dabbing foundation on my pimples. Then I started using more, eventually covering my whole face. Soon, I couldn’t live without my makeup.
I grew up at a time when television advertising featured beautiful models wearing a certain brand of foundation. Many other teenage I knew girls saw the same ads. So we came to believe that we couldn’t be beautiful, unless we slathered chemicals on our face.
Now, though, we’re learning that some of these chemicals can interfere with our hormones. Consequently, they are appropriately named “endocrine disruptors.” Because they mimic estrogen, there’s growing concern they can potentially cause breast cancer.
Some brands of foundation may also contain talc. This substances has been linked to ovarian cancer, when used as a body powder. Although you’re using this on your face, it doesn’t make sense to put a known carcinogen anywhere on your body. About 60 percent of anything you apply to your skin eventually ends up in your system.

Fortunately, we’ve come a long way since I was a teenager. There is a growing selection of natural cosmetics, including liquid makeup made with organic aloe and grapeseed. Made with minerals and plant-based materials, these products are designed to nourish your skin.
Now that I no longer put chemicals on my face, my skin has a healthy glow. The blotches are gone. Foundation is now optional. I can’t help but think these widely advertised “beauty products” were hurting my skin. (I also cleaned up my diet, which has undoubtedly also had a positive effect on my complexion.) As a middle-aged woman, I’m convinced that natural beauty products now help keep my skin more youthful looking.
With better products available, there’s absolutely no need to ever use a chemical-based foundation again.

Juice Beauty Perfecting Foundation contains natural ingredients. These include organic acai berries, goji berries, grape seed, aloe vera and minerals. The plants in this formula contain antioxidants, which protect against damaging and age-promoting free radicals.
Unfortunately, many cosmetics, even the ones we see in higher-end boutiques, contain a distasteful assortment of chemicals. We’ve gotten used to these brands, so we’re reluctant to replace them. But that’s only because we’ve probably never used a natural beauty product. Since I’ve switched my entire skin-care routine to organic and natural, I know now that plant-based formulations work even better. At least they do for me.

Makeup Without Sunscreen
In addition to the problem of adding parabens and talc to liquid foundation, a newer trend has been to add sunscreen. Chemical sunscreen, however, contains ingredients that have caught the attention of the Environmental Working Group, which has published a paper called The Trouble With Sunscreen Chemicals.
Although we’ve been told that using chemical sunscreen is a good health practice, these formulations are questionable. One of the compounds that’s widely used is oxybenzone, which also mimics estrogen. This paper underscored the alarming news that this chemical is so widespread in the environment that it’s also been found mother’s milk. Certain levels of oxybenzone are also found in nearly everyone living in the United States, according to this research.
Juice Beauty Perfecting Foundation contains no oxybenzone, or any of the other sunscreen ingredients now added to many women’s makeup products.
