    Plant Therapy Geranium Essential Oil

July 7, 2015 in Essential Oils

Plant Therapy geranium essential oilOne of the most used aromatics in my collection is geranium essential oil. Originally, it was purchased for my teenage daughter, who’d been diagnosed with ovarian cysts. Thankfully, this problem was resolved, without further mainstream medical intervention. (We did homeopathy and a form of acupuncture. She also took herbal remedies and essential fatty acids.)

However, I do need to stress that I’m not suggesting that geranium essential oil is a cure for polycystic ovaries. This is a condition that requires professional expertise. My daughter, at the time, was receiving top-notch care from a naturopathic doctor. Aromatherapy was just one of a number of different forms of medicine we used.

Geranium oil is believed to have a number of potential health benefits. Because of this, aromatherapists often recommend it as an overall health tonic. It helps tone your internal organs and your digestive system. In addition, it assists your liver in removing toxins. Diluted geranium essential oil massaged into your abdomen is considered a good home remedy for occasional bloating caused by trapped gas and sluggish digestion. However, please understand that these are historic uses. Scientific research is lagging behind when it comes to understanding how aromatic oils work.

    Uses for Geranium Essential Oil

Geranium oil is sometimes recommended for its potential hormone balancing action. It’s believed to help with PMS and hot flashes,

Geranium essential oil is also thought to be a good nerve tonic. Aromatherapists sometimes suggest it for people suffering from nerve disease. Like other essential oils, it likely contains It contains compounds that may boost the body’s own defenses against inflammation, the root cause of disease. If you can control inflammation, you’ve just won a major battle in reclaiming your health.

I have chronic nerve inflammation, and, for me, aromatherapy has been very helpful. However, I do need to stress that I’m not a doctor. I can’t give medical advice. Nor can I claim that geranium oil or any other natural remedy will solve a particular health problem.

    Geranium Oil and Skin Care

Geranium oil is one of my favorite beauty products. Many women, myself included, use geranium essential oil to fight the visible signs of aging. This is one of the oils I rotate into my beauty regimen. All essential oils must be diluted before applying them to the skin. But this is especially true for geranium oil, which is very powerful.

So I make up a special solution to apply to my face. I mix one drop of geranium oil to one teaspoon of rosehip seed oil, which is also good for your skin, and seems to have its own wrinkle-fighting properties.

If you are prone to acne geranium oil may possibly help because it has astringent and also likely antibacterial properties.

Geranium is also considered a good mood enhancer, according to aromatherapy experts. So if you’re having a bad day, a few whiffs of this fresh, clean scent may improve your outlook. This oil contains natural sedatives, so it’s often recommended to promote sleep in people suffering from insomnia.

Ounce for ounce, geranium essential oil is more precious than some other essential oils, such as peppermint and lavender. But since it’s so concentrated, you only need a drop, which is then diluted in a carrier oil. Since this is the solution you work with, a small bottle will last a long time.

I buy a lot of my oils from Plant Therapy, a family-run operation located in Twin Falls, Idaho. It sells high-quality oils made from botanicals grown without chemicals or pesticides.
