Mainstream doctors consider autoimmune disease irreversible. When the body starts to attack itself, there’s no way to stop it.
Typically, the situation gets worse. So various drugs are used, in an attempt to halt this progression.
Treatment often includes steroids. These are given to calm an overactive immune system. Unfortunately, they also have potentially serious side effects. Suppressing the immune system can lead to infections, cancer and other complications.
Holistic health experts treat autoimmunity much differently. They may recommend dietary changes. They prescribe natural supplements to reduce inflammation. Most alternative medical practitioners believe that curbing excess inflammation leads to better health.
Oftentimes, they’ll recommend various superfoods, such as camu camu for inflammation.
They also try to make you as healthy as possible. This includes reducing unnecessary forms of stress.
Can You Reverse Autoimmune Disease?
Please understand that I can’t give medical advice, since I’m not a doctor. Nor can I promise that any natural remedy or superfood can help reverse autoimmunity. All I can do is share my own story of regaining my health with a good diet, stress reduction, herbs, homeopathy and essential oils.
Alternative practitioners believe in the human body’s ability to heal, even from autoimmune disease. Here’s an example. Years ago, I visited a chiropractor. This doctor had earned a reputation for making chronically ill people well again.
Adrenal Fatigue and Inflammation
He diagnosed with me adrenal exhaustion. Then he recommended a supplement to support and “feed” my adrenals. If I’d gone to a regular doctor, this condition may not have been picked up.
Fast forward 10 years. I didn’t take this chiropractor’s good advice to heart. Once I felt better, I slipped back into a lifestyle filled with stress and junk food. Predictably, since I already had problems with inflammation, I developed a potentially crippling nerve disease.
Fortunately, I’ve pretty much recovered from this condition as well. But it was much more difficult the second time around. Also, I now need to really watch my diet and take potent natural herbal anti-inflammatory agents.
Superfoods for Autoimmune Disease
If you have an autoimmune condition, a holistic healer might tell you to consume various superfoods. They’re called superfoods for a reason. First, they’re filled with nutrients, including whole vitamins, antioxidants, enzymes and amino acids, which your body needs to regenerate cells.
They also contain powerful natural anti-inflammatory compounds. Eating superfoods in moderation is much safer than popping ibuprofen. That’s because NSAIDs can cause potentially serious side effects. These can include internal bleeding, a potentially life-threatening condition.
With NSAIDS, there’s also the remote possibility of a reaction called Stevens-Johnson syndrome. This a severe, life-threatening skin condition. It’s caused by ibuprofen.
I don’t mean to get too far off track. The point I’m trying to make is that superfoods are preferable to popping pills.
The good news is that God has given us a lot of superfoods. So we don’t have to eat the same ones over and over again.
Actually, as I recover from my second condition (I really wish I’d taken that chiropractor’s lifestyle advice), I obtained the best results by rotating these remedies.
Natural Healing for Autoimmune Disease
One of my favorite superfoods is camu camu berry. This is an Amazonian fruit. It’s packed with natural Vitamin C. It’s been said that it contains more of this nutrient than any other fruit except the Australian bullygoat fruit. Compared to an orange, camu camu has up to 60 times more Vitamin C.
Crucial for good health, Vitamin C is found in fruits and vegetables. However, it’s not the same thing as ascorbic acid, a laboratory-made derivative of whole Vitamin C. (This is the compound added to vitamin pills.) The best sources of the real vitamin are whole foods.
Camu camu is among them. This superfood also contains natural B-complex vitamins, and various amino acids. If you’re looking for an all-natural vitamin supplement, this is a good one.
Organic Raw Camu Camu Powder
Until fairly recently, few people living outside of South America knew about camu camu. Now, though, it’s become very popular. So it’s shipped around the world. People in Japan love it. A lot of it is consumed in the United States.
When my nerve pain flares up, camu camu seems to relieve it. Fortunately, this pain doesn’t happen too often now. Superfoods are excellent for detoxification. Holistic healers tell us that fewer toxins means less inflammation.
So far, I’ve tried two different brands of camu camu. I liked how the first was packaged in an amber glass jar. But I didn’t think I was getting good value. So I ordered Nutivas Naturals organic camu camu powder instead. This is the brand I use now.

Many of the most popular “superfoods” come from South America. It seems as if new ones are continually being discovered. That’s a good thing, because I think these food-based remedies work best if you take them for a month or so, and then switch to another.
You can then return to the original superfood, after a break. For some reason, for me, rotation seems to make these nutrient-dense fruits more effective. I’m not sure why, but other people have noticed the same thing.
My own holistic health practitioners tells me to stop taking something when I lose my desire to consume it. Apparently, my body knows when it’s had enough. When I start craving it again is the time to resume.
Nutivas Naturals, which sells the camu camu shown here, also sells organic dried maqui, acai, goji berry, goldenberries, mulberries and other superfood fruits.

How much camu camu do you take?
Tina, I take very little. About a quarter of a teaspoon. It is very powerful. Also, I rotate whatever herbs and superfoods I eat because it just seems to work better that way.
