    Teas To Help Insomnia

November 4, 2015 in Herbal remedies

herbal tea that helps you sleep at night

Getting a good night’s sleep is very important. That’s because lack of rest affects your health.

Unfortunately, I have first hand experience with the devastating effects of chronic insomnia.

In my early 20’s, I worked for a newspaper. Oftentimes, I’d stay in the newsroom well into the early morning hours. Then I’d go home and try to sleep. It took me a long time to wind down. Then, I’d be up with the sun.

I’d lie in bed for hours, trying to get back to sleep. But the slightest noise woke me up.

Soon, this schedule ruined my life. I spent a lot of time worrying I’d be too tired to make it through another late-night shift.

Even after quitting this job, and switching to a daytime schedule, my insomnia stayed with me.

Finally, as I reached middle age, I found help with natural remedies. Now, I take a combination of herbs and homeopathy to balance my metabolism. One thing that’s been really helpful is herbal tea to help insomnia. (I’ve also attacked this problem with essential oils and homeopathy.)

Oftentimes, right before bedtime, I drink an herbal tea that contains natural tranquilizing compounds. They work amazingly well. In fact, I have to make sure I don’t do this if I’m not planning to sleep.

    Teas to Help Insomnia

Insomnia is a big problem. In the United States alone, about 25 percent of the adult population don’t believe they get enough sleep. This isn’t by choice, as they toss and turn trying to nod off, or they awaken too early and can’t get back to sleep.

About 10 percent of the total population suffers from severe insomnia. This is not a transitory situation. Trying to get to sleep is something they struggle with nearly every night.

Not surprisingly, sales are booming for prescription sleep aids. Approximately 6 percent of Americans between the ages of 50 and 59 now take sleeping pills. Typically these are sedatives, and they carry certain risks. One of them is chemical dependence.

Sleeping pills can also make you drowsy the next day. This, in turn, has the potential to increase the risk of car accidents and other injuries, resulting from increased grogginess.

Many health experts, especially those in the alternative medical field, believe that these pills only mask a more serious problem, and do not promote healthy, restful sleep.

Fortunately, though, there are alternatives. Many herbal medicines function as natural sedatives. They also contain nutrients and enzymes you may need to naturally boost your level of serotonin, also known as the sleep hormone.

One of the more soothing ways to take these herbal medicines is to sip them as a hot tea, shortly before you go to bed. There are a number of formulations on the market, blended with multiple herbs, which work in synergy to help you get a good night’s sleep.

Many herbalists believe this is why blends are often more effective than single herbs. Chamomile tea is widely regarded as a good sleep aid. However, it will probably work better if you mix it with other plants that have a similar effect.

Herbalists call this synergy. It’s a principle seen in essential oils as well. This is why aromatics are often sold in blends.

Traditional Medicinals organic Nighty Night tea contains chamomile, plus Passion flower, linden flower, catnip, hops, spearmint, lemon verbena, organic lemon peel and lemongrass.

Passion flower is considered an adaptogen, which means it supports your nervous system, and helps your body better handle stress. Most people would agree that we’re living in unusually stressful times.

Lemon verbena has been used for centuries as a natural stress reliever, long before people began using pharmaceuticals to take the edge off.

I love Traditional Medicinals herbal teas, because I know they’re good for you and made from certified organic ingredients. I also find that I sleep much better when I drink an herbal sleep tea just before bedtime.

I realize everyone is different. What works for one person may not work for another. I’ve also found that switching my herbal remedies around seems to make them more effective.

Another herbal sleep remedy is Octavia Tea Serene Dream. This organic blend contains a mix of lemon balm, chamomile, verbena, lavender, lemon myrtle, spearmint and Valerian root, an herb especially noted for its ability to restore and heal the nerves.

I love your blog! I found you through pinterest, and your articles are really helpful and accessible. I use chamomile tea before bed and for anxiety, and it always produces a nice calming effect 🙂 I’m also an MLM oil distributor, but have been secretly trying other essential oil brands. (My upline doesn’t know, lol)

Hi Laura, thank you so much for reading. For very specific circumstances, I like one MLM oil. For everything else, I buy outside of the MLM circuits. Some things you just don’t need to share with your upline. 🙂
