The Thieves oil blend was apparently “inspired” by a group of Medieval bandits. During a plague, they stole from the sick and dying, without catching the fatal illness.
According to the story, the thieves were apprehended and brought before the king. He wanted to know how they stayed well, despite close contact with the sick. The infection was so lethal undertakers were afraid to get near the dead bodies.
The men, however, knew how to protect themselves. They came from a family of pharmacists, so they knew about a special formula to ward off illness. This special proprietary blend has since come to be known as Thieves oil.

Thieves oil is an excellent product. It’s sold by the Young Living company, through a network of multilevel marketing distributors.
I remember the first time I heard about Thieves. I was intrigued by the story. This information about Thieves came via email. It was sent by a woman who’s like a Young Living sales rep.
I’ve since learned more about Thieves, and also about the various other companies that sell similar products.
Immunity Essential Oil Blend Recipe
Just to be clear, however, Young Living makes the original and proprietary Thieves oil. So, when I’m talking about its competitors, I call them germ fighting oils.
I have absolutely nothing against Young Living, and I think it makes excellent products. If you do want to order the original, proprietary Thieves oil, it’s available online, or you can buy it from a distributor.
However, when I’m writing about essential oils, I also like to tell people about lesser-known brands that I’ve thoroughly researched and used myself. (Keep reading, and I’ll tell you where I buy my germ-fighting formulas.)
Thieves Oil for Infections
Once I heard about this recipe, and its widespread reputation for preventing infections, I began to read more about this blend and the history behind it. I wanted some of my own.
I kept hearing more about this formula and I still planned to buy some, when I had the money.
Meanwhile, though, I started learning more about essential oils. Soon I realized that many other companies exist, aside from the two large MLM players. Oils that aren’t sold through multilevel marketing networks tend to be a lot less expensive than MLM oils.
Fabulous Frannie Protect Germ Fighting Oil
After doing more research, I became comfortable with shopping outside of the MLM circles. One brand of germ-busting oil I have in my house is sold by Fabulous Frannie, and it’s called Protect. I guess you could call it a Thieves knockoff, as it contains the same oils found in the proprietary blend. But I’ve been really happy with it.
After buying the first bottle, and realizing it smelled just like better-known brands, I ordered more. Fabulous Frannie is a small California-based company that’s becoming better known, especially for its infection-fighting blend.
Essential Oils to Fight Germs
I now buy nearly all of my oils from companies that don’t sell them through MLM distributors. Actually, I went a little crazy one winter, and ended up buying much more Fabulous Frannie Protect than I needed.
Fabulous Frannie Protect also smells just like a germ-fighting mix I made at home, with a better-known brand of oils. Because I ended up with so much, I was able to give some away.
I gave one to my son, who was going away to college. This way, I wouldn’t worry as much if he got sick, and I wasn’t there to take care of him. Because I had a good supply of the Protect blend, I wasn’t afraid to use a lot in a kitchen diffuser, which I ran every night at the height of cold and flu season.
Thieves Oil and Infection
Please understand that I’m not a doctor. So nothing I write is intended as medical advice. I urge you to discuss any health concerns with your own physician. I also can’t make any claims that any aromatic formula, including Thieves oil, will keep you well. All I can do is share my own story of how I use various essential oil blends, including Protect and another formula called Germ Fighter Synergy Blend, in an effort to stay well.
Essential Oils to Fight Colds
I don’t know if was the germ-fighting oils, or just a coincidence. Last winter was the first in my life that I didn’t get sick. A couple of times, I thought I felt a cold coming on. However, rubbing some diluted thieves-type mix on the inside of my wrists. My symptoms went away almost immediately.
Of course, this might have been just good luck. I also realize I can’t claim or imply that anyone else would enjoy the same results.
Essential Oils Antibiotic Blend
But there is some science to back up claims that these five oils mixed together do give some germs a lethal punch. Research conducted at a Utah university showed that Young Living Thieves did kill airborne bacteria.
We need more independent scientific testing before we can conclusively say this brand, or any other, is proven to fight infectious disease. But this type of research is something I don’t care to wait for. Cold and flu season is right around the corner.
