About 20 years ago, my adrenal glands began to sputter. This happened after a period of intense stress.
The end result was chronic inflammation. It attacked my nervous system. I developed intense lower back pain that traveled down my legs. Soon, I was unable to walk. If I tried, my right leg dragged behind.
I could have gone to a regular doctor. Undoubtedly, I likely would have been diagnosed with something terrible. The one mainstream practitioner I consulted assured me I was dealing with a serious condition.
Instead, I saw a team of holistic health experts. I learned I had adrenal exhaustion, coupled with off-the-charts inflammation. (Please understand I’m not suggesting you avoid your regular physician. Conventional doctors are very good at putting a name on your illness, as well as ruling out more serious problems. Nor am I writing this article as medical advice. All I’m doing is sharing my personal story of recovery.)
Recovery from Adrenal Fatigue

I believe herbal medicine helped me regain my health. The plant-based medicines I took were designed support my adrenal glands, so they could start recovering. Natural anti-inflammatories relieved my pain by reducing inflammation. It’s also possible these time-tested medicines may have helped with detoxification.
I also made certain lifestyle changes. Unnecessary stress had to go. Homeopathy was hugely helpful. It took years, and the gains were often subtle. But slowly I was able to walk again. The pain also began to subside.
After years of healing, I’m nearly symptom free. However, I’d probably get sick again if I didn’t eat a clean diet, take herbal supplements and the right homeopathic remedies. In recent years, essential oils have been added to the mix.
I’m not doctor. So I can’t give medical advice. Also, I can’t claim that any alternative remedy that worked for me will work for anyone else. All I can do is share my personal story of recovery from adrenal fatigue.
Zyflamend to Reduce Inflammation
Because my adrenal glands were exhausted, they weren’t producing enough of the hormones that control inflammation. Because I have this weakness, I’m still prone to excess inflammation.
Some inflammation is a healthy and natural. This is the process by which the body repairs itself following an injury. But too much can cause a cascade of health issues.
I now try to keep my pain away with various herbal remedies. One of them has been Zyflamend, which I’ve taken to hopefully keep my inflammation at a more manageable level. This is a very popular all natural remedy, and it’s sold over the counter. I’ve found that I need to constantly rotate my remedies. This means I can’t take anything too long without a break. So, currently, I’m taking Herb Pharm Adrenal Support Blend, which you can see on the right.

Treatment Options for Adrenal Fatigue and Pain
Getting diagnosed with adrenal fatigue was tricky. I had to see a holistic healer. Mainstream doctors, for the most part, dismiss this condition, unless it reaches the point of adrenal failure. The treatment for this potentially life-threatening situation is hormone replacement. Unfortunately, side effects are part of the picture.
Many alternative medical specialists believe milder adrenal dysfunction is widespread. This is when your adrenal glands still work, but not very well. In the earlier stages, they may produce too many hormones, in response to long-term, low-level stress. Later, after they’ve been overworked, hormone production falls off. This can then result in painful inflammation.
The good news is that recovery appears to be possible. Treatment options center on reducing stress, getting enough rest and upgrading your diet (toxins take a toll on the adrenals). Various practitioners may also recommend different types of herbal supplements designed to support your adrenals, and reduce inflammation.
In my case, homeopathy seemed to help contain and even reverse the nerve damage. This 200-year-old method of healing is amazingly effective. Like other natural remedies, it works best when combined with an overall healthy lifestyle.
Essential Oil Good for Inflammation
The best results, at least from my own personal experience, seemed to come from using a variety of natural approaches. A few years ago, I discovered essential oils. These natural plant extracts contain potent analgesic and anti-inflammatory compounds. You can now find special aromatic blends, made specifically to address pain.
In our house, you won’t find any OTC pain relievers. We’ve gotten rid of these drugs. Instead, we use natural remedies for mild aches and pains.
Below is a special Pain Aid Synergy blend sold by Plant Therapy, which produces high-quality, 100 percent pure oils. This formula contains a blend of 10 essential oils, designed to work in synergy to relieve discomfort. Aromatherapists generally believe a mix is more potent than using oils individually. Plant Therapy is a company I know and trust. That’s why I’m a repeat customer.

How to Heal Your Adrenals Naturally
During my recovery, I tried to eliminate the factors that sent my adrenals into overdrive. This included eliminating toxins in my diet, in my environment and in my life.
Eating organic was a must. A lot of the food in the United States is genetically modified. New research is beginning to link engineered crops to various health problems, including cancer. Certified organic food does not contain GMOS.
Household cleaning agents and personal care products are loaded with chemicals. I traded these for plant-based cleaners and cosmetics, made with natural essential oils. I found the safer products worked just as well.
People can also be toxic. If you suffer from adrenal fatigue, it’s typically brought on by stress. It might be necessary to take a look at some of the relationships in your life. There are excellent books and other online resources about how to deal with difficult people.
