Because so many people have discovered the potential benefits of being gluten free.
Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case when my children were little. For various reasons, both of them were on a strict wheat-free diet. They also couldn’t have milk. Shopping was a big chore.
Sometimes, I found what I needed at the local health food store. Much of the time I didn’t.
So, every few weeks, my husband and I would pack them in the car. We’d drive to the nearest organic grocery store, about an hour away. We’d try to buy everything we needed until the next trip. We spent a fortune. Because the foods were so expensive. Lack of competition does that.
Where To Find Affordable Gluten Free Foods

Back then, it was possible to order some stuff online. But it was still prohibitively expensive. We really did spend a fortune on gluten-free foods.
All of this has changed, for the better. You can even do gluten free, on a budget. Thankfully. Many more brands have come onto the market, a good thing for the consumer. Nearly all of them are available online. That’s why I now do a lot of my gluten free shopping at Vitacost. Gluten free food is also readily available at your local grocery store.

But it’s much easier to order online. You will probably save a lot of money this way too.
Online shopping spares you from the very annoying experience of taking a trip to the grocery store, only to realize the item you want is not in stock. Nowadays, I am so thankful I can get my gluten free food without leaving home, thanks to VItacost and similar online outlets. (Vitacost is my personal favorite.)
Vitacost has very low regular prices. You can save even more money with free shipping. I highly recommend you go for the free shipping option. Otherwise, shipping charges will probably offset any savings gained, over buying items off the shelf items. I always make sure to hit the $49 free shipping threshold. If I’m a little short I just add more non perishables, such as toothpaste or liquid black soap, which I know I’ll use at some point.
I visit my local health food store very rarely now. Although I want to support local businesses, I also have a food budget. This is easier to stick to if I order online. Specialty items, such as organic and gluten free, generally cost more than regular food.
So I’m happy to have found Vitacost, a large discount web-based health food store.

Vitacost is also where I get a lot of my regular non perishable groceries and herbal teas. For food and spices, its prices can’t be beat. It sells raw organic honey at discount prices. This is also where I get Bragg’s Liquid Aminos soy sauce substitute.
This soy sauce substitute tastes just like the real thing. But it’s gluten free and free of GMO’s. Genetically modified foods are known to cause cancer in lab animals.
Although Vitacost may not have every single thing you’re used to, it does have a lot. It sells about 45,000 different items. However, you may not be able to find some of your favorite brands. It tends to just carry a few selections in each category.
There are also generic Vitacost items. These are generally priced even lower than the big name counterparts. I’ve always been very happy with the quality of the house brand offerings. I often order one or more generics with each shipment.
Tinkyada Brown Rice Spirals Online
This discount retailer also offers an excellent price on Tinkyada brown rice spirals. Out of all the gluten-free pastas I’ve tried, this one is far and away my favorite.
Vitacost also carries a full line of Bob’s Red Mill products. These prices definitely beat even the good deals I can find at a local closeout brick and mortar store.
I do think the price at Vitacost is a little high on those delicious organic rice-based Mary’s Gone Crackers. But it matches what I’d pay at a high-end grocery store, when I can find these little gems. If you’re on any type of special diet, and you need to travel, these crackers make a delicious and satisfying snack. This is one of the few items I think Vitacost could do better on pricing.
If you’re gluten free, I love the fact that you can shop for just about anything you need under one roof.
Even though my children are no longer gluten free, it’s me that now has to avoid wheat. Sticking to gluten-free selections helps my chronic nerve inflammation. So I totally appreciate Vitacost.
The only drawback is that you need to spend a minimum of $49 to get free shipping. But I always do. Your package usually arrives at your house in about 3-4 business days.
