It’s not sold in every grocery store, and you can often get a better price by shopping online.
I need to buy a lot of this milk substitute, because my college-age daughter has adopted a vegan diet. (Although I’m not thrilled with the idea, I want to support her.)
Worried that she wasn’t getting enough essential fatty acids in her diet, I asked her what foods she should eat, so I can buy them.
After doing some research, I was sold on the health benefits of hemp milk. Actually, according to the Global Healing Center, one eight-ounce glass contains 2,800 mg. of Omega 6 and 900 mg. of Omega 3 EFAs. It’s the latter category that most of us need more of. So I decided to order some non GMO hemp milk from a large online discount health food store.
This serving size also contains 10 Amino Acids and 4 grams of protein. The average woman needs about 46 grams of protein a day, and more if you’re active. Hemp milk also contains calcium, Vitamin D and various minerals.
I did joke with my daughter that I was buying a highly nutritious product that comes from the Cannabis plant. She noted the irony in this as well.
But hemp seeds, from which the milk is derived, contain little or none of the psychoactive THC, the reason why this plant is illegal in many parts of the world. Buying hemp milk in the United States is perfectly legal.

One grocery store in our area sells a popular brand called Living Harvest Tempt hemp milk. We bought the vanilla-flavored unsweetened variety.
This 32-ounce container is packaged in a boxed container, similar to cow’s milk. However, until it’s opened, it doesn’t need refrigeration. It contains hemp nut base, vanilla, sunflower lecithin, sea salt, carrageenan, dipotassium phosphate, Vitamin A palmitate, Vitamin D2, riboflavin, Vitamin B12 and “a trace of sugar.”
It has a really pleasant taste, with just a hint of vanilla. Out of all the milk substitutes I’ve tried, hemp is far and away has the most milk-like taste and consistency. It tasted delicious poured over my cereal.
This milk shown here is sold at Vitacost, a large discount online health food store. It has 45,000 items, including its own house brand labels, which I regularly buy, because I trust the quality. I’ve saved so much money by shopping for organic groceries at Vitacost.
Because I suffer from an autoimmune nerve condition, I’m not able to drink regular milk. However, this is a small price to pay for being able to life a pain-free normal life. At one point, my condition was crippling. Giving up milk has made a huge difference.
I love the taste of this brand, and I’ll buy it again. But I’ll be ordering it online. I can usually get a better price this way and it’s a lot more convenient. The grocery store that sells hemp milk in my area isn’t one I usually shop at. So Internet shopping will be time saving.
Ingredients in Hemp Milk
I like the fact that Living Harvest Tempt contains no genetically modified ingredients. If it did, this would be a deal breaker. Only a few studies have been done on the impact of GMOs on our health. One animal model showed engineered corn caused huge mammary tumors in lab rats.
The only complaint I have about this product is that it contains carrageenan. This seaweed derivative is often added to organic foods. However, some holistic health experts are concerned it’s not safe.
Online health expert Dr. Andrew Weil, MD, says to avoid “regular consumption of foods containing carrageenan.” He cites researcher by another doctor that links food-grade carrageenan to increased inflammation.
However, my daughter’s food choices are limited. She doesn’t want to drink almond milk. Soy milk has also been linked to thyroid disorders and other health problems.
Since I’m concerned about the lack of good fats in her diet. We don’t live in a perfect world. So I’ve decided to put up with a little carrageenan in our hemp. Plus, I’m banking on the fact that the known benefits of hemp seed will override any risks. Actually, the benefits are impressive.
Health Benefits of Hemp Milk
Hemp milk is derived from hemp seed. Many nutrition experts, such as Dr. Josh Axe, DC, consider these seeds to be a superfood. He notes that these seeds are high in gamma linolenic acid (GLA). This essential fatty acid helps with hormone regulation, he explained.
As with many other healthy foods, hemp seeds help control inflammation, which causes conditions such as arthritis, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s disease.
Reversing an inflammatory condition isn’t always easy. But it’s possible, and necessary, if you want to feel better. My journey back to good health would have been derailed if I didn’t do something to reduce my inflammation.
Where Do You Buy Hemp Milk?
Many people living in the United States haven’t heard of hemp milk, or it’s wide-ranging potential health benefits.
So choices are still limited, especially if you’re shopping at your local supermarket. In my area, one of the major grocery chains doesn’t even carry this product.
At this point, it appears as if our best bet is Living Harvest Tempt Hemp Milk.

Hemp seed used to produce hemp milk is specifically bred now and contains 0% THC it also tends to have very low levels of other non-psychoactive cannabinoids such as CBD. Just thought you might want to know, it’s not going to get anyone stoned or even make them fail a urine test, for one it would be grounds for federal investigation if it did because it is sold internationally in nation’s that have legal cannabis and where it is still deemed an illicit substance.
I hope this helps put your mind at further ease. Also, do not be upset that your daughter has decided to follow a vegan diet, the benefits to the environment and potentially her health (if she is consuming a varied and balanced diet) are innumerable. You should applaud her commitment to try and make the world a better place on an individual level. A lot of us (including myself) are too stubborn to make that kind of sacrifice.
Kind Regards
